2010 SALMON RUN NEWS - PART 2
Submitted by Colin Hay on Fri, 2010-03-12 15:17
I hope it is alright with everyone, but I thought it may be easier to keep with the action by starting a new post.
According to today's West, the salmon action is starting to hot up around Albany, a big school was seen between the Capes and someone caught a heap of salmon at a Perth beach.
So it is all starting to look a bit more promising.

if you have caught tailor,
if you have caught tailor, use the same rigs baits and techniques, if not mullies or WA pilchards on 3/0 gangs either wieghted or unwieghted, depending on conditions, they've been caught on surf poppers,, silver slices and hard bodey lures as well. look for the gutters and cast to the side of them, also you will most likely see them surfing the waves, awesome fun good luck

20lbs fine for salmon. You
20lbs fine for salmon. You can go lighter if you want a bit more fun, or even a little heavier if you're running braid, or just want to get them in as quick as possible. Personally I normally use about 20-30lb braid on my 9-10 footers when I'm casting bigger baits + lures, and then 10-20lb on my lighter gear for smaller lures and soft plastics.

How for north will they go?
I'm a bit ignorant and hoping to get into the salmon for the first time this season. I plan to south, but wondering how far north the salmon go? I know you can get them north metro later in the season (yanchep, two rocks, etc) - do they go further?
Cheers!

Higgo reports salmon were everywhere
I was at my spot on the weekend between Walpole and Margs. Schools of Salmon everywhere and they're
massive. Not only the size of the schools are large but the weight of the fish
is unbelievable. Our largest was 8.2kg and they averaged probably 6.5kg
Mostly caught on plastics with a few on Mulies. I just can't believe the size of them this year. Last year we were only getting 4 - 5 kilo fish maybe a 6 kilo if we were lucky. This year it's going off. Photo's to come
Cheers, Higgo

It appears that the salmon schools have reached the Capes
So anyone planning to head down south this weekend should check out their favourites spots between Augusta and Dunsborough.

Cant get out for a look
Cant get out for a look during this break, it's only a short one for me and I've got lots to do before I head back to work on Thursday. Next break I plan on terrorising the salmon if they're about. Might look at a week day out if anyone is coming down this way and want to have a look, share costs etc. Don't head back until Friday that week.
Cheers

The salmon move through pretty quickly snipesleher
so it can often be a case of being in the right place at the right time or doing a lot of prospecting to find where they are on that day. I would certainly be giving the Contos area a good look if I were you.

slices and twisties, Silver
slices and twisties,
Silver twisties, and blue slices do the trick.
65-80grams
Also throw in a couple poppers or stick baits aswell, they are always good to help stir up a spooked school of fish.

Salmon off Hillarys
Went for a dive on a reef just behind Little Island off Hillarys. Spotted a small school of Salmon (20-30 fish) estimate 3-4 kg. Saw them a number of time over an hour so they were hanging around the reef. Also spotted large school of herring so know why. Did not have fishing rod with me (bugger)

Residents
Got down to my spot in mandurah bout twelve thirty and a huge resident school was already there smashing baitfish on the top. Already had a lure on the rod but it was tangled in some line and I couldn't untalngle it coz I was shaking in excitement and they were gone by the time I got it undone. They came back a minute later but were just cruising and not feeding so they didn't want a bar of the lure. Waited an hour and a half and never saw them again. Fish wouldve been 2.5-4kg

I just got back from the best weekend I have ever had down around the yallingup area in 5 years of visiting during numerous autumn weekends each year in search of salmon.
I would go as far as to say I had to put in more gut running than ben cousins himself because the schools were virtually running back-to-back-to-back from the first second we rocked up in the cark park. Well worth it though. Top weekend. Even scored a few tailor between us out of the salmon schools for the frying pan.

just got back from Margret
just got back from Margret River,
no luck on my side, but chap next to me at Prevally got a thumper. I'll post the pics later,
We had a small school in Prevally on sunday morning and they did follow the lures in, but only one taker, then the bloody morning local swimmers cruised through and scattered the school.
Later on Sunday was up at Injap ( spelling?), but nothing there and the swell was pumping in on a high tide.
Was told by a local that the close to full moon and pressure change of the front coming over would have shut the fish down.
Did here of fish being taken at Hamlin and up right near the Capes, but we did not get there.
oh well next time.

The old farts hit the water everywhere from Castle Rock to
Augusta and fished hard for almost two days, and while we came across reports of small schools coming through at various spots along the coastline it appears that the big schools are probably still betwen Albany and Augusta.
Sherbs and I had the pleasure of running into Bodie and he picked up a few nice salmon down Hamelin Bay way in a hit and run visit.
Great to meet up with you at last Bodie and well done on your catches mate.

Heres a few from
Heres a few from yesterday.
First 2 caught between 6am and 7am sunday morning, directly out from the boat ramp at Hamelin bay. School was only small about 1 tonne or so, and were sitting 80-90 metres out on the reef. Was the only one who managed to get a couple as i could make that distance with the 14 footer.
Next few came from around the back beach of Hamelin. We were lucky to get a school estimated at 8-10 tonne come right in infront of us maybe 25 metres out. Biggest salmon Ive seen in many years. Many hooked, many spat the lures and a few hit the beach.
Blue s lice was doing the trick
I think the salmon are in full swing down that way now. Some other people we spoke to said a school came in on Saturday right next to the ramp at about 8 tonne and just sat there all day, with only a couple landed.
On sunday there would have been 6 schools along hamelin beach, could tell by the groups of cars and anglers up the beach.
a few pointers for those who are new to targeting salmon.
Generally there will be a group of people throwing lures at or over the school, so when someone hooks up, be kind and dont cast over there line and let them play there fish.
Might be an idea to see if you can tag along with someone with experience chasing Salmon. Im still amazed at how many people cant see the salmon schools, or even a few salmon swimming around on the reef.
One of the salmon i caught directly out from the boat ramp, a couple of poeple were really surprised i managed to hook one. they didnt think there were any fish. I could see these fish moving about on the reef for a good 2 hours, and no one noticed. (tails breeching the water everynow and then)
Good to me you too Colin, bummer about the fish but they are about thats for sure. I may try make another run down the weekend after next if you guys are in the area :)
Or a boat trip might be even better :)
We also managed 4 nice KG's 40+cm's 1 40cm flattie about a dozen herring, and hundreds of skippy ranging from 10cms to 40cms.

There were still schools in Albany earlier this week so I would think Denmark would be a great place to try your luck.

The salmon are hitting the beaches everywhere from Hamelin Bay to Bunkers Bay this week. I would have a look around Meelup in a week or so.

Hey,
Myself and a mate are heading down to Smiths Beach tomorrow morn, will be moving around abit though. Hoping to have a peek at Bunker Bay and Eagle Bay aswell. If anyone is in that vacinity tomorrow don't hesitate to say "hi". Just look out for a Blue Long Sleeve Daiwa Shirt with a wetty underneath.
Cheers.

I am not sure how old that report was Johyy They have a history
of writing up old reports. We were down that way Saturday and there was nothing around.
But that is not to say they won't be there again now. That is the story with salmon chasing. You have to be in the right place at the right time.

Fishing reports are good
Fishing reports are good guides of where the fish are at the moment. As Colin mentioned, just be at there at the right time and you'll get into them no problems. There have been shit loads caught over this weekend no doubt.

There was a decent school going through Bunker Bay on friday morning, few people got into them. Was chatting some of the locals on friday and they said they've been pretty inconsistant so far, just drive around until you see a school then get out and chase them.
Mind the smell, ive been fishing!
