attaching lures

would like to know how everybody else attaches their lures... metals/minnows etc

do you guys prefer tying a knot straight onto the lure itself or maybe use a snap swivel for quick change overs?

also is it okay to tie straight to mainline or would a leader be better... would be very interested to hear what works best for everyone else?

i dont like snap swivels

i dont like snap swivels because they can bend out if you hook a large fish. i attach braid to fluro or mono, via bimini twist to swivel, then tie a "bream hardbodied knot" onto the lure. kinda like a perfection loop, but easier to tie with light lines

I personally use about 80-100cm of flurocarbon leader always about double the KG line class of the mainline. i then use a 2x Blood knot.

Firm believer in quick snaps

Firm believer in quick snaps to change lures, Save a whole lot of leader aswell as you dont keep cutting it to change. Get the smallest Decoy Egg snaps that your line class can allow. Very strong for their size. Different scenario when using bream lures, try to avoid them where possible.

or if plastics i use a rapala loop knot

mate hards for bream to

Wed, 2010-04-28 07:01

mate hards for bream to hards for mackies use a clip but no swivel i use the decoy egi clips for bream/squidjik and fpor the bigger stuff i use the owner clips i feel you would be a bit behind the eight ball if you didnt as if you spend the money and get the right size clip the good ones are built "ballenced" so the lure will always track straight.
as for metals always use a b/b swivel to stop line twist.
and softiesw i always tie a loop knot for no particular reason .

I use quality Hawaian Snaps. Very easy to change lures and rarely have they failed.

Without clips, i use lefty's

Wed, 2010-04-28 11:12

Without clips, i use lefty's loop. When i use clips, they're usually clips that dont consist of opening as they weaken and open itself up too easy. Hawaiian clips for bigger lures as they dont create too much of a weak point as you open em. On small lures i use the breaden egi clips.

For squidding, breaden clips as you dont open them at all. If not breadens, then speedclips as its combined design with a split ring.
I've lost a few jigs to most other clips that weaken, so im bloody wrapped with the performance of breadens.

oh and i use a good 2 ring

Wed, 2010-04-28 11:16

oh and i use a good 2 ring swivel to join leader if im using metals or poppers, and any other lures that tend to twist in the water to minimise line twist.

Depends on where i am

Wed, 2010-04-28 17:48

Depends on where i am fishing and what i am planning on catching. For smallish fish i generally use a tiny snap swivel for quick and easy lure changes but for bigger fish i normally tie straight to the main line or attatch a leader.

i use clips

Thu, 2010-04-29 00:19

the convenience of equipping and taking off lures on a whim without too much effort and wasting leader to me is far more important than quality of presentation. i use the decoy round snaps in size 00, a seriously tiny thing thats rather strong for its size (stated breaking strain is 18lbs and its like 7mm long). its also light enough not to affect the buoyancy of minnows at all. havent come across a similar clip yet but that said i havent gone to a shop in a long while

for metals and poppers i swap to a barrel snap swivel, only because my decoy clips cant fit the insanely thick eyes on those lures

depends, nothing beats tying

depends, nothing beats tying some fluro lead straight onto the lure, but you go through too much..for me if i plan on using alot of lures i'll go with a small clip (no swivel) otherwise i just tie striaght onto the lure using a fluro leader
