Beach/Sand Worms?

I was south of Dawesville on the weekend with the kids down at a beach.  I thought I'd show the boys how to dig down for water.  I was about 2 meters from where the water/waves were reaching up the beach and dug down to my elbow.  The hole was slightly wider than my arms and I managed to dig up about 12 sand worms?  I didn't know you could get them down there or anywhere to tell you the truth.  Has anyone had any experience with beach worms and was it just a fluke that I dug that many in one spot or would they be that thick all over the beach?

My eldest son wanted to take them home to put in our worm compost heap but I ended up giving them to a guy fishing for whiting a bit further up the beach who was doing quite well without my worms I might add.  I will try digging up a few more and try to catch a feed of whiting myself next week some time.
