Beach/Surf Fishing
Submitted by metroLBfisher on Mon, 2012-03-26 17:30
heading up north this weekend to try locate a few deep holes, gutters etc.
Was just wondering what people use in the way of tackle:
What pound line 20lb? or heavier? Braid or mono?
How heavy do you go for sinkers?
What size baits?
The reason im asking is im trying to get as much possible distance as i can, i've tried a few different things but havnt been able to get much distance.
I have a 3 m shimano surf rod that seems to do the trick.
Open to any suggestions or recommendations as im starting to go more often
Cheers,
Jamie

20lb
Mate on my beach reel I have 20lb mono, and make my rigs out of 40lb, 3/0-4/0-5/0 ganged hooks depending on Millie size or gar size, I run a 4oz star sinker tends to be enuf weight of the beach.

is that the sort of rig and
is that the sort of rig and tackle you would use say targetting mulloway? small sharks etc.
do you find mono easier to cast with or?

Mulloway, tailor
Mulloway , tailor , that's fine . Sharks no. I have LBG stuff for sharks, 50lb braid, top shot of 80-100lb mono to a 125-150lb wire trace, but that's set up just for the bigger stuff, I find braid cast further, ( JMO)

yeah i couldnt agree more
yeah i couldnt agree more always worth having a set up for sharks with wire etc bit heavier gear i have over head 1000 meters whiplash 100 lb braid with 400 pound steel trace usually thats for bigger sharks though.
was just interested to see how light i should go to get some distance into some gutters for tailor mulloway etc.
hopefully have some luck. do you think 300 meters of 20 pound braid would be enough for a mulloway?

Should be heaps
Just let it run with the bait first, I've been told when you get a run count to 4-5 then set the hook, , that could be to late or early but that's what I got told, plenty of line tho

awsome should suit me good,
awsome should suit me good, if 300 meters is enough thought it would be if im onyl casting less the 100 meters.
200 meters if a fair run off the beach.
yeah i've heard the same have to wait for them to swallow the hook as there mouths are very hard and alot of people make the mistake of striking to early

you only need to cast as far
you only need to cast as far as the gutter most gutters around here are between 5 and 40 metres from the beach its not always about distance
where are you thinking of going
i use 15lb casting a good 4 - 6 oz sinkers and a mulie on my light rod 10ft rod
25lb casting 6 - 7 oz stars with gangs or snelled hooks on the big rod (14ft) usualy a big fillet bait or whole fish as bait
i get most of my fish on the smaller rod
shitloads of mulloway being caught in gero at the moment fu#* the taylor good for bait
if you want to stop in gero ill show you a few spots

yeah just been reading a heap
yeah just been reading a heap of beach structures, gutters etc. just hard to identfy when your first starting off, im sure ill get use to it!
im thinking about heading towards wilbinga, ledge point or moore river around that area.
i pretty much use the same sort of rigs, yeah your right cant go wrong with the tailor they are my favourite baits had most success on them aslong as they are fresh good for both sharks and apperently mulloway too :)
I would love to head up to gero but might be a bit far just for one night. Im heading to gero over the easter weekend but will be at abrolos islands.
How long does it roughly take to get there from perth? might plan a two night trip for the weekend soon, hit you up for a session

Mulloway
Mulloway can be easy or hard to catch. Sometimes they will just smash the bait and other times they will play around for ages and drive you insane. Using a bait-runner reel with a sliding sinker helps in that the fish is not so spooked and you can let it run for a while. I keep things pretty simple these days. I carry two spools. One with 20lb braid and the other with 30lb. I never fish heavier than that.
If your headed up the coast try also using poppers as we have had great success with them and you can fish difficult terrain where the Tailor hang out. As someone else has stated the gutters are generally not very far out. I hook a lot of fish in close on the retrieve. Polarised sunnies will hep you pick the gutters.

deffs want to give geraldton
deffs want to give geraldton a shot, 4 and half hours isnt too bad. If i was heading up that far though would like to stay just more then one night.
Yes your definatly right mulloway are shy and very picky eaters i think the key for me to landing one is fresh bait or livies, presenting the bait as natural as possible, with the lightest gear apperently cant have tension? scares them away as soon as they feel it.
I will definatly be taking my polarised sunnies head up on a high point in the dunes and try locate some deeper gutters.
Hopefully wilbinga has some decent ground and the sea weed isnt bad! i have looked on satelitte images and found what looks to be a few pretty deep drop offs, might give them a crack see how it pans out!
What bait do you think is the best for mulloway and do you prefer snelled or gangs?

Fresh Tailor
That's my preferrence for up there. Large snells are the go. Give you a better hookup. I often catch Mulloway on gangs up that way while fishing for Tailor. 6/0 gangs are my preferred Tailor rig. If your looking at Gero most definately check out the s-bend. Good place to stay and plenty of good water there. Not a trip you can gain benefit out of without spending a couple of nights up there.

yeah thats what i thought
yeah thats what i thought aswell! actually heading out tonight for some tailor ready for the weekend it may not be as fresh as i like but tailor beats most baits so having some soaking in the water is a start. Yeah i've always prefered large snells for bigger fish and for using whole baits, obviously gangs are good for tailor, gardies etc.. I have seen alot of posts about S bend on the forums but never knew where it actually was. I definately will give it a crack i think the next trip away looks like geraldton for two nights

Road Trip
Haha you drive to Geralton for a fish, then you'll be like 'we gone this far, we might as well go to Kalbarri for a look" haha then you'll think 'damn we are pretty close, lets go check out Coral Bay and Exmouth'. As soon as you know you'll driving around Australia for a year!

when fishing for mulloway try
when fishing for mulloway try using no sinker at all if you can make the gutter without a weight much better chance of landing a mulloway and when fishing for mullowy try to stay away from gangs, scaleys and mulies work well on circle hooks set up with main iine 20lb braid, 40lb mono leader two circle hooks close together to siut the size of the bait one at the head one at the tail, when the fish runs they will not feel the weight of the sinker and spit the hooks, circle hooks set much better and much deeper,

Rovex is what I use also
I generally stick to 40lb for most but if I am targeting bigger stuff I move up to 60lb. It's the rod, reel and line that make most difference IMO. That's what is going to break first. The leader is there to provide a robust terminal setup and to help you land the fish if no gaff is available. Shark fishing specifically requires a different setup of course.
