beginner in Exmouth

Hi guys,

im heading up to Exmouth for the first time in July.

ill be just doing land based fishing (no boats) and wondering if i could get some pointers on what sort of gear to take up there (rods/reels/lines/lures/etc)?

heavy gear surf rods with heavy braid line? lighter outfits with lighter line? bait/lures/softplastics/etc?

can anyone share what outfits have worked for them in Exmouth?

think the species i would be aiming for are GT's, queenies, snapper, bonefish, bluebone, etc

any info would be much appreciated.

cheers

Dont really need surf rods,

Dont really need surf rods, unless you want to chase sharks, but then you dont need surf rods either.

Chasing anything other than sharks you dont need anymore than probably 30LB braid. any heavier casting distance becomes an issue.

Usually when i fish the shore in Exmouth i Fish 8lb light gear for GT's and queenies, and maybe 20LB for spangles if you find them.

Lures and plastics are a must, metal slices, gold and silver ones, white plastics usually work the best from shore.

Plenty of threads on here re: Exmouth shore based, spend some time reading them and you will find plenty of info.

cheers Bodie,

i currently only have heavy offshore gear (the most fishing i do) but ive been meaning to get myself a good light outfit for times like these.

any rod/reel combos you could reccomend before i head down to the store?

also does anyone know any good hotspots at Exmouth? (from what i hear its hard to find a place thats not good around there so that might be a silly question)

cheers again

Hey Dorado , I spend a lot of time there as my kids live there. If you fishing just from the coast get yourself a net fishing license and yourself a throw net,you can get one up there from the local tackle shops.

Then you need to look for the bait fish skools and catch yourself some for live baits. Usually around Bundeigi boat ramp or off Hunters beach just past the lighthouse.

We have just used a 5.6 ft baitcaster with 15kg braid and just a ball sinker and a good 2ft leader one single 4/0 hook and your livebait hooked just 3/4 the way down its back.

We have off hunters and bundeigi around that time of the year fishing the incoming and high and outgoing tides for about 3 hours and caught big Queenies, big GT's , Spangled Emperor and also big dart and the odd baldie too.

Hang on too and make sure your gear and knots are up for a big fight.

GOOD LUCK you lucky bugger.

poppers

Hey Dorado21

we also use poppers too , i like the redhead with a white body about 4 to 6 inches long.

My young bloke did well at surfers beach up there too with a popper, you can see it on yutube if you search for

"Jacks queenfish" and watch and see the gear he is using.

good luck again.

I use a light flicky from shore up there

Currently have a diawa flame 6ft with a CI4 4000, but this reel is almost overkill. Your choices off rod/reel combo is endless, and depends on your budget (and with me what else I might use it for).

As mentioned plackies, slices and poppers are the go to fishing from shore. I find bait a poor second, as most target fish like a moving target. Not to say you cant have fun with bait. Most of the spots we used to fish LB get snaggy with the reef so close. Live bait under a ballon also an option.

Dont forget the whiting and they are usually within 2-5m from shore, and some off them are turbo variety compared with the SW cousins, and a great feed. Mostly on the gulf side beaches. More secluded southern beaches.

The west side any beach or reef area, the scenery makes up for it with the white beaches and crystal clear waters. I tende to pick the wind, and fish the opposite side and change targets accordingly.

Havent done much since the boat, but its a nice change to sit on terra firma, with a beer in hand, allowing the non drinking P plater to drive home after a nice day in the sun and "small" surf.

As mentioned a search may refine your questions.
