best way to defrost bait ?

hey guys.

just wondering whats the best way to defrost baits such as mulies + pilchards + whitebait ????

i've just recently went up north, travelled outta carnarvon to red bluff and tragically my bait went to shit. bought a 2.5kg bag of pilchards from caltex, n put them in the esky with ice straight away. 1hr and a 1/2 later i finally reached red bluff. went down to the beach, put the whole bag in a bucket filled with salt water. 5-10 minutes later went to grab a pilchard to put on the gangs n it fell apart in my hands. so any tips so this doesnt happen again ?

cheers

defrost them then salt them

then refreeze, they last longer for big trips away that way.

The salt takes all the water out of them and makes them less likely to go mushy.

I'm sure there would be a few threads on here about bait salting. Its years since I have done it, but it is a viable alternative to defrosting mushy bait.

Salted Mulies

Sat, 2010-01-02 14:47

Some places sell salted mulies. sometimes called long life.  I think Ive seen it at BCF.   I bought some in Kalbarri at easter, and the left overs have been in the freezer until last week.  The wife made me get rid of it so I used it for berly.  Defrosted and cut into chunks.  Not as good as the day i bought it , but still firm enough to put on a hook

Throw the block of mulies on

Throw the block of mulies on the ground hard (on concrete) and that will break them up. Then keep them in an engel or the like and pull them out as you need them. If you don't have an engel keep them in an esky with some of those cooler blocks or ice. Can't beat quality bait and most caltexs don't have that.
