Catalina/Daiwa High speed query

Prompted by Belly's Stella question the other day, i thought I would float another. Some time back I owned for a short period of time a Sol II 3000H which when under resistance was almost impossible to turn the handle of. It would spin freely and super smooth when not under load but any weight on the end of the line (herring, small weed etc) seemed to have a massive impact on winding resistance.

Anyway, I recently got a 5000H Catalina and seem to be having the same problem? I have Hi gear Certates which are perfect and nothing similar has been experienced in any of the shimanos or other Daiwas owned. I should add that despite the resistance the Cat is really smooth and pump-wind scenario is fine but a ball ache to retrieve flat out against any loading (like even a few ounces of lead!).

Anyone have any similar experiences/recommendations - it's only a few weeks old so can go back if necessary.

You can try getting a longer

You can try getting a longer handle for it, rcs do various sizes. This will slow down your retrieve a bit but will give you more leverage to wind. Had the same prob with my SOL 3000H.

My son is reporting a similar

My son is reporting a similar issue with a 4000 Sol 2.  I have two 4000H Catalinas and my sone has one as well, but never had this issue with those.

 Yeah a different handle

Yeah a different handle would probably make a big difference but I'm pretty confident there is a gearing issue ultimately so may get it sent back to daiwa. It's a funny problem to describe as the reel is as smooth as silk when not under resistance.

Dont know

But it sounds as if the gears/rods are being distorted or pushed out of alignment when under load. I'd query it with the supplier.

 Yeah, sounds like the reel

Yeah, sounds like the reel is being distorted in some way when under load, similar to some really cheap reels that flex easily

I was thinking body flex

I was thinking body flex myself which would account for that either that or somewhere in the shaft etc.  Would think a catalina wouldn't be prone to that though.......

Maybe some how a part is

Maybe some how a part is missing or damaged allowing for movement under pressure?

bearings are seized

Sun, 2014-11-23 18:45

the bearings are seized ive had the same problem. you think the reel is good to go but once u have a fish on its a struggle. had a quote to fix it but it was cheaper to buy a new reel so instead I pulled it apart and went down to Peel bearings in mandurah and replaced them. the reel is like new.
