check your insurance

Gents

A few weeks ago I was fishing at the narrows.

I had 16ft rod out for Mulloway and was spinning for tailor with a 6ft rod.

I had just cast out to the 2nd arch of the brige when 3 asshole hoons in a tinny came screaming over both my lines.

Needless to say both lines caught up in the prop.

My 16ft rod started to go in so I grabbed it - as this was happening the braid on my 6ft rod started screaming out and began to cut in to my hand.

I had no option but to drop the rod or else my fingers would have been cut off.

They 3 guys then started circling around and shouting and then took off down the river.

It had turned out they had stolen some other guys crab nets as well.

I reported it to the police and got a report number.

I then contacted my insurance for a claim.

It turns out I was not covered by insurance as I only had insurance for possesions that are on my property and was not covered for possesions away from my property.

I am realitively new to Australia so was not clued up on insurance matters.

Leason learned: - Please double check all your policies to ensure that you are covered for this type of loss.

My rod, reel and line only cost around $450 but it is money I could have been putting towards buying more beach casting gear.

That is sad to hear hummeldoddy.

We have in our insurance policy an add on that covers ' portables ' such as rods, reals ,car fridges , cameras etc.

Cant remember what company it is with tho atm.

May be worth your while to follow up with your company to see if they offer that sort of coverage. If not tell them to go shove it. Not before you get coverage from someone else first.....lol

Yep insurance companies are crafty buggers. Had my laptop stolen from my car which was parked on my verge (smashed window) they covered the window but not the laptop. It has to be in a lock-up garage not even a carport on your property is covered. Lots of fine print .....wankers

we dont bother claiming for

we dont bother claiming for small items, as you need to have a small excess to make it worthwhile

we have a reasonably large excess, $500 i think, as the house and contents insurance amounts on our policy are pretty large in our case.

so while a small excess means you can claim for rods, etc  you might find the larger premium you get charged when having a smaller excess means you are worse off in only 1-2 years (unless you are making claims every year or so)

mind you, all insurance premiums have been going up in recent years. Our biggest bills are house insurance and rates, then medical insurance is the next cheaper one
