Coral bay
Submitted by Wafisho on Thu, 2012-05-17 17:31
Hi people I'm off to coral bay in 2 weeks towing my 7.2m boat up for only the 3rd time and was hoping for some advise. Fishing there before found it easy to catch all the pelagics, but could never find the quality table fish , tried all over from 120m down and never really found good ground past 40 m. Does anyone have any advise or spots their willing to share?
Cheers Chris

I've been there twice mate
I've been there twice mate but I got given some spots by good friends, unfortunately I've been warned not to share them as they were cracker spots, but if you try anywhere out in the 60-120 meter mark and sound out the ledges you will get some awesome fish. I'm no expert up there but we caught red emperor pearl perch huge gold band job fish spanglies and heaps of other stuff. And we didnt travel too far out of the north passage.

Been a few years
since i've fished there but we used to do an annual trip.
We mostly fish southwest of South Passage in depths ranging from 40-70m for Reds/Rankins/Emporers etc., 100-120m for Gold Bands. We never really found good 'ground' as such more broken ground/coral with small ledges of 1-2m. Best to find changes in bottom hardness with you sounder then sound around looking for schools of fish.
It's always a good idea to keep a very close eye on your sounder when trolling and mark anything of note that you can go back to and drop a line.
Hope this helps and you should get some more good tips off here

Another good tip
if you are targetting Reds is BIG BAITS. Be it bycatch fillets, Mullet/Herring fillets, whole squid etc. and/or a combination of the 2.

as said biiiiiigggggg baits,
as said biiiiiigggggg baits, fresh fillets of small stuff is best. the fish are out there and no real point looking for good ground as there isnt much of the structure stuff out there. keep a good eye on the sounder and usually the fish will show up as a small flare up . just been up there and fished in the 60's with success on the reds as well as in the 120 mark out with Bernie on mahi mahi 111 with good catches of rosy jobbies , goldies ,good size robo's and even saddletail. plenty out there .
good luck and hope to see a few good fish come your way.
