Cray Pot sizes

Looking at having a crack at potting some crays this coming season. I've noticed there's amateur size pots and pro size pots.

Is one better than the other, and for that matter, is it ok for recs to use a pro size pot? Keen to get a double bait box setup.

The full are pro pots are very heavy, you would need a winch. The 3/4 wooden slatty pots still catch plenty if you put them in the right place at the right time...

Bigger is better

Always found that pro pots are better catchers, extra weight plus the two bait boxes.
Fresh bait in box 1 today and in box 2 tomorrow, that way there is always fresh bait in and its all gone when its number ones turn again.

Cant beat the pro pots, hold

Mon, 2014-08-04 12:38

Cant beat the pro pots, hold more crays, hold bottom better, less chance of someone pulling them ( unless they have a winch ).

Down side- thay take up more room in the boat, bloody heavy.

Is a winch essential for the pro sized pots?

without a winch on the boat, NEVER the pro pots. Tried years ago with bigger is best, and ended up with knuckles dragging along the floor.

Recreational rock lobster pot sizes

Mon, 2014-08-04 16:12

A bit of friendly advice I hope you don't get offended by, don't even think about using pro size rock lobster pots.

It's illegal, check out the Recreational Fishing for Rock Lobster Guide 2013/2014 page 5 & 6.

The Fisheries Dept have very impressive fines for any breaches of rock lobster fishing regulations.

it is completely LEGAL to use craypots the size of a commercial size pot. I fish them and they catch the best. Lasts season best pot had 60 size on a single day pull. you can pull them by hang if in shallower than 15m, over that and its a struggle

Always used pro size pots and pulled em in up to 40m.. Yes it's hard but it's not the end of the world if you have two blokes of reasonable strength.. Catch and hold way better then any other pots..

Please tell me were you get the idea that you can use pro cray pots if you are a recreational fisherman Dhuvinile & Belly88.

If I'm wrong then fisheries publication on the matter is wrong also.
