Patience
Let them run with the bait (at least 10 seconds) before you strike. They will normally spit the bait if you strike straight away, alot of people lose them quite easily because they are too eager. Patience is the virtue, don't get too excited.

Does sound like catties
If the line is taking off quickly and at a constant speed then its more than likely catties.
Barra usually inhale the fish causing the line to run quickly at the start and then move off slowly in fits and spurts. Count slowly to ten and then strike, but only strike when the line is moving.
A bit of styrofoam just above the nylon trace can help keep the bait up away from the catfish.
