Disgust at Lancelin

Me and a couple of buddies went to Lancelin for a bit of kayaking and 4 wheel driving last weekend. After a top day out on the water we went for a few frothies and a steak at the Endeavour. We were a bit full afterwards so went for a stroll down to the jetty to see what was being caught. I have never been so disgusted in my life. The first group we walked past were busy filleting a four inch yellowtail....wtf!!  Every crew on there was the same...pillaging baby fish and ruining the stock for the future...where were the fisheries???? If we hadn't been so hopelessly outnumbered I would have kicked each and every bucket I walked past back into the water!!!!!Apparently the jetty gets overrun like this every weekend....I don't want to come across as racist but JHC there wasn't much english being spoken on the jetty that night.

i dont think theres is a size limit for yellowtail mate and if they were filletting it they were obviously using it as bait which is all yellowtail is good for.

never been to busso jetty? The rape and pillage without fisheries on patrol isn't confined to Lancelin.

Also quite sure there is no bag or size limit on Yellowtail.

but there is a bag limit of 30 per person. im not sure how they would eat them as there are plebty of bones through a yellow tail! if it was only yellow tail they were catching and keeping i wouldnt be too worried!

If I wasn't breaking any laws, and you walked by and kicked my bucket in i would thump the shit out of you. There is a reason why certain fish have certain size and bag limits. Some fish are more self sustainable than others, and are more prolific and breed faster than others. The only thing you have demonstrated here is your ignorance,

Fully agree too ... It's the usual thoughts I've been reading about races on the forum lately ...!!!! And we think when we say "Its not about race", we're good to go, and keep on going on and on, longest posts I've read are about races! .... Now that's the disgusting issue, not the "yellow tail" ...

Gut and scale the yellowtail, drop them in whole into hot oil and deep fry until very crispy, serve on a bed of rice with a side of tomato onion and lime salsa. You'll be surprised. In our house the only thing left is the spine

yep, i dont actually mind yellowtail! Nothing wrong with catching a bucket full within your limits. I do that when im catching them for frozen baits.

So what is your opinion on this? Do you have one?

Thu, 2012-01-26 20:44

IMO bread and butter fish are there for the taking and with little or no limits. Personally if I caught a few nice little yellowtail I would be very tempted to chuck them in the bucket for bait. Better still, live bait for Mulloway. There are rules and we follow them. Let's not get too caught up with what we see without understanding what the rules are.

Need to spend

more time at Lancelin Jetty.

Mate has a beach house near the jetty and we are up there every other weekend.

Over the Xmas and New Year break there were tons of kids & adults catching small herring, yellowtail, whiting, tailor, butterfish and blowies.

Some got thrown back, some not but at least people, families, kids were doing something constructive rather than sitting in front of the idiot box.

It was great to see not only the family but also the community spirit alive and well.

Over the same period the Fisheries were there in force checking boats, fishing licences, bag limits, size limits, handing out stickers and books to people on and off the jetty & generally doing a fantastic job.

Rather than walk past, I stopped and talked to them, asked them what they had caught, did they understand bag & size limits, one kid was fishing with the plastic safety plug still on the end of his hook and couldn't understand why he wasn't getting a bite.

This Great Country we call home & celebrate today was built on strong values & morals;

Standing By Your Mates, Help the Underdog, Right a Wrong, Walk in someone shoes before you bag them etc.

So next time rather than walk past and feel like kicking their bucket, take the time to talk to them, maybe you might be surprised on how easy it is to connect.

Thu, 2012-01-26 20:11

Yellow tail taste great, in some countries like Portrugal they cost a bomb to buy. I know of at least one community out of Melbourne that use to pay an arm and a leg to import them in from Spain because they didnt know you could catch them in Australia. Its a pitty they didnt speak much english, because they could of probably told you, if you ate other fish instead of the usual Dhu, Baldies, Black arse ect ect you may just protect your fisheries and not wipe out your demersal species. If its legal leave them alone. The bag limit for yellow tail is 30 per person and there is no size limet. Is it more of a crime to use them for bait or to eat them?

If nothing else..

It's great to hear Lano jetty still firing for all your bread and butter species! Learned alot fishing off that jetty as a kid with the family and have great memories of doing so. If I've ever seen anyone, white/black/asian/purple, ever put something in their esky that looks undersize I always ask if they'd like to borrow my fish ruler to double check.. The hint usually gets across
