Genesis 550xl Island Cab

Hi Guys and girls

Its time for a new boat, Ive had a look at couple of different ali boats makers. The genesis range has caught my attention, so what are peoples thought and experience with the genesis 550xl island cab boat will be mainly used for offshore fishing and diving and how well do they handle the chop. All information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Justin

I have a 580 xl limited edition, great boat...
Done a bit of reasearch since buying and i reckon the barcrusher 620c is a much nicer finished boat..
Prob would have got that if i had seen it first...

Check them both.

the bar crusher is a oz copy

the bar crusher is a oz copy of the surtees
just have a look at both and make your own mind up
you can shut a flap in the keel of the surtees to hold water in whilst on the move
they would be my pick out of either
and both ahead of genesis IMO

Got the 5.8XL and although

Got the 5.8XL and although it is my first alloy I think it handles pretty well.  Can be a little bumpy on the chop like all boats.  Few of the guys from this site have been out 25nm with me and been on other glass boats etc so they may be able to give some feedback.  Main issue I had was taking it back to hayway may times for the same issues, cabin leaks etc. In the end I got sick of taking it back so just fixed them myself.  Recently took it back to get the speedo fixed in the Icommand and last time I tool it out it is still not working.  When looking around I looked also at the factory out in Armadale where they are made.  I was going to get a merridian until I saw this boat.

Genesis Island cab

Wed, 2009-09-09 23:33

Just had a quick look at their website, and couldn't see it, but Rockingham boating recently had a second hand one for sale. From memory was only 3 years old, was made for the owner of the company, then sold on, before being put up for sale again. Without knowing how well it had been looked after, it presented pretty poorly for a relatively new boat. Don't know where you are at, but could be worth a call to see if they still have it, and go for a look. Might influence your thinking.

For what its worth, I am about to have a 5.5 centre cab made by Wakemaker Marine. I'd recommend you give them a look.

heard some serious issues about Hayway Marine

Wed, 2009-09-09 23:55

some problems with service.

I was looking at genesis but would buy factory direct and not from/through Hayway.

Yes i have had personal dealings with Hayway and would not recommend them to anyone.

Pity because genesis look good and why deal with (dodgy) middlemen.

good luck

Trailcraft tough as nuts

Perfect for up here in Dampier. Bumpy ++ in seas, but i think it is like all Ali's.

I have a 540 Sportscab and love the rugged nature.

hey crasny, what size motor have you got on the back of your 540? salt water marine has a second hand one in their yard which has a 90merc. only done 20 odd hours.

Ali Boats

Fri, 2009-09-11 11:20

Hi Justin,

All depends on what you want. In my opinion the trailcrafts are a good boat but would benefit from a reverse chine rather than the small extruded chines. They also tend to be fairly light and can get a bit flighty in the rough stuff. Genisis tend to be quite full in the bow section, particularly on their runabouts and cuddy cabs, not sure if they change the hull shape for the island cabs and CC's. I think they do it to push the dash forward and maximise fishing space but it does tend to make the ride a bit harder. If you want the boat to ride well in rough water a propper reverse chine is a big advantage. I don't have experience with NZ boats or bar crushers.

My advice would be to definitely talk to a custom builder before commiting. I have seen some of the boats built by Daniel and he builds a really good product.

Hope this is of some help.

Cheers,

Brunno

Cut out the middle man and get the boat you want by dealing direct to the builder,It's well worth it in the end. Try Oceanic boats in Balcatta. Quality builder and great to deal with.
