GME MT400 EPIRB Battery replacement not worth it..

 I called GME to find out about replacing the battery in my MT400 Epirb and they stated the cost is $279. The guy I spoke to then went on to say that it would be better for me to go to Whitworths where I can buy a new one (MT400) for $199 which comes with a bonus 6 years battery replacement taking it to 12 years plus you get some waterproof speaker gizmo thrown in..

Looks like it is Whitworths for me then.. crazy isn't it..

Yep.... been down that road before with a McMurdo EPIRB. Cheaper to buy a new GME unit.

The cost is not just replacing the battery, but the testing to ensure the unit is still in spec and will survive another 6 or so years.

Any one have any idea whats the difference in the 400 and 600 ( am guessing the 400 is old model hence price) but will go down the down path of a EPIRB with GPS $350 for the 600G . 10 year battery life .

the MT400 is a manually

the MT400 is a manually activated EPIRB without GPS, hence the cheaper price. You just have to make sure you have it easily accessable in case it turns to tears when you are out and about. It's no good still attached to your sunken boat and you can't reach it..

Whitworths prices from today;

GME MT600 EPIRB  - Manually Activated 406MHz              $279.00

GME MT600G EPIRB+GPS -  (Manual)                               $349.00

MT403G 406MHz EPIRB+GPS - Water Activation                $449.00

Ocean Signal RescueMe EPIRB1 Manual Activation               $379.00

MT400 406MHz EPIRB                                                         $199.00

ACR ResQMate G 406 MHz GPS EPIRB                                  $299.00

MT403FG 406MHz EPIRB+GPS - Automatic                           $559.00
