Hi bungeye For $500 you will be able to buy yourself

a good combination.

An Ugly Stick is a good choice - as are rods like the Daiwa Heartland and Sensor Surfs, Shimano Tiralejo's, etc.
I picked up a Redback Beach rod recently, and that is a great value for money beach stick.

If you are keen on a Shimano reel, then a Stradic would fit your budget. I have two and they are reliable, strong and smooth.

My mate Sherbs has been using a Heartland/Stradic combo recently with good success on salmon and you would be able to pick up that combo for around $500.

Speak to Fishwrecked sponsors, the Tackle Shack in Malaga and Oceanside in O'Connor and they will set you up beautifully.

Good combo

Thu, 2009-07-02 13:16

I have an Uglt Stik Platinum 12" with a Shimano baitrunner 6500. A great combo for serious beach fishing. I would recommend the combo to anyone needing heavy beach setups.

What sort of fishing do you want to do Bungeye?

Thu, 2009-07-02 13:19

There are a number of different options you can look at depending on the type of fish you are chasing

Yer got to go a bait runner

Thu, 2009-07-02 18:02

Yer got to go a bait runner for surf. then you can leave a livie or bigger bait out set in baitrunner mode and it wont pull your combo out of the rodholder and into the drink when something big grabs it. ;)

don't forget the good ol Alvey

Thu, 2009-07-02 18:26

bullet proof reels and plenty of rod options.

if you drop it in the sand just wash it in the surf........not many spin reels can handle that.

dead easy to use and very capable outfit

I used to be an Alvey man for quite a while

Thu, 2009-07-02 19:57

The only problem is that it requires a rod that suits an Alvey reel.. One with a short butt and the eyes to match. Generally a one piece rod was my favourite.

A different casting method that's for sure. One thing I found is that you can't use light gear with any degree of surety as the drag setting is hit and miss. I used to use my hand on the reel to control that and quite often I would get excited and place too much pressure on and bust off. The good quality spin reels seem to me anyway to be far more predictable in setting the drag. JMO of course. Many Eastern States anglers would pounce on me for making such statements LOl so go easy guys.

Alveys are fantastic in that they have few, if any, moving parts and require little maintenance. They also have great casting potential with the right rod mach up. I lost a few of my favourites in a house fire. I have never renewed them albeit I would always like one or two Alvey combos in my armory.

plenty over here will have the shackles raised...ha ha

Thu, 2009-07-02 20:55

the alvey is way lighter than originally and the rods coming out to match use current technology and the short but length works well with the alvey gimble/belt, reducing even more weight. best to always hold a surf rod rather than leave it in the rod holder.....

casting is dead easy! and look at the amount of line available on the spool (no running up and down the beach chasing big mullas...ha ha)

not everyones cup of tea but still very viable option.

I have a small alvey which is designed for blackfish (luderick) but use it on the beach with a very light rod and it's a fish magnet.

Who knows how to cast an Alvey?

Thu, 2009-07-02 21:32

It's an interesting subject. When I bought my first Alvey back in NSW (because it was the thing to do over there) I was told to learn the technique. I couldn't understand why as it was just another rod and reel. Then I did some study and guess what.. the technique was completely the opposite. Instead of using your right finger (as a right handed caster) to hold the line you use your left hand to do that and place the right hand as far up the loaded stick as you can...

The result of course was a huge heave-ho cast with great distance. I still smilke today when I see anglers using the spinner technique of casting with an Alvey reel.

BTW Damo.. I used to do a lot of Blackfishing with small Alveys. That was great fun.

yeh chasing luderick and pigs was great fun

Thu, 2009-07-02 21:46

got to head south and explore the rocks.......

the technigue of casting is sound!

you push and pull all in one thereby exerting maximum distance with minimal muscle effort as the biodynamtics of the movement provide the distance not the muscle.

means anybody, with practice, can cast long distance. the surf beaches were rough where I grew up and the last thing you wanted was to wade out with waders and then get smashed by a wave and dragged under......

least blackfish and pigs were in close on the rocks

Hi damo

I grew up chasing luderick and drummer as well. Where were you located? Most of my fishing was around the North Curl Curl, South Curly and Dee Why headlands.

I was chasing luderick and drummer anywere from Melbourne through to Merimbula when I was a young buck. most of the luderick and drummer was around Merimbula obviously, although a cousin of the luderick, the zebra fish, was in Vico, and not targeted much but the local but they still pulled hard. good days and good sport fishing.

Left Victoria after high school some 18 years ago now.

was an interesting technique of fishing and in those days rock fishing was a prefered method for me.

Yeh was good old days

Fri, 2009-07-03 09:16

family used to own a caravan at the park on the point, many years ago now though.....

don't think using luderick gear would stop the sambo's off the rocks here though..ha ha

still got the gear in the shed and do regularly dust it off and reminise.

Ozflex

Fri, 2009-07-03 11:37

Go the Ozflez- great rods, very light but incredibly strong. I would get a Shimano Saragosa- great reel. Load up with 30lb braid and there isn't much you can't do with it.
