How do you keep your feet warm in winter?
Submitted by bergerac on Mon, 2014-06-23 08:20
Thinking of heading out in the boat tomorrow but I havent really fished in winter before. Ive got plenty of warm clothing but i usually get around in the boat barefoot. With it being in the low 0's the next few days im a bit worried im going to be getting around on a couple of ice blocks! Has anyone got any tricks to keep your feet warm especially with getting a bit wet launching and retrieving?

I find that a cup of concrete
I find that a cup of concrete does wonders.
Alternatively, I used to import a brand of wet weather gear. As part of their surfing range were fleece lined neoprene boots, much like dive booties.
Fleece lined knee-high neoprene dive booties. That is like heaven for toes.
Just mind the stink after 24 hours...

Burkes are relatively
Burkes are relatively inexpensive, but the $170 green French ones are fantastic,
It is extremely important to remember than you MUST get one size too big, so if you end up in the drink, you can get them off.

buggered if I would ever wear
buggered if I would ever wear gum boots or wader out in the boat,
you would have a hard time getting them off your foot if you go in the drink , ever fallen over in a river with waders on ?? bad news indeed
I wear dive booties with a thin pair of socks underneath , warm cozy and easy to swim if it where to be needed , either that or as mentioned cheap pair of uggies , once your in the boat

In a previous life, I worked
In a previous life, I worked in a marine retailer in Fremantle, supplying to commercial fishermen. The number of gumboots that were sold to fisherman, both recreational and commercial, was amazing.
Personally, I wouldn't wear them in a fit and would stick to my dive booties or my fluffy neoprene FMB's, but each to their own...

Dive boots for me
I find that a pair of dive boots do a good job for mr, they keep the cold out and give me a solid grip on the carpeted deck. wash them out with fresh water when I get home and they are as good as new next time I go out.

Bare feet
Just have thongs on to launch the boat then bare feet till its time to put it back on the trailer. Sounds like you are all a bunch of softcocks wearing Uggies, dive booties and wellies.

Crabbing
Put the boat in last week to get a feed of crabs, was 9deg when we launched at 0730 but made up for it because it was mid twenties by the time we got in at 1030 with about 25 nice ones for a good feed.
Even when pro fishing down south, used to have clothing in a plastic bag and launch the dinghy wearing only jocks at Dead Finish round from Augusta and same at Hamelin Bay. Nothing worse than wearing wet clothing with a strong wind to increase the wind chill factor. The water felt that cold your knackers would be up behind your ears trying to stay warm.

8 deg
Forecast for 8 degree here, haven't got anything planned on the water so will probably walk the dog over and buy the paper when it arrives round 0800, shorts and thongs expecting it up to around 24 by 1100 so not too bad if the wind doesn't get up
