How many fish is enough

How many fish is really enough.....I see pic's of lots of Tailor etc Fish that in my opinion does not
freeze well....why not just grab enough for a feed and release a few
EDIt
there seems to be some confusion I am not referring to any specific post just the amounts of fish kept in general

And I think you'll find that
And I think you'll find that tailor pic is between 9 people so if they each have one family member that's 18 people to feed. So that number of fish might be just enough for a feed...
Why not message the bloke and find out instead of this post

Understand where you are
Understand where you are coming from. but each to their own I think.
As long as it's within the law IMO its ok
certainly not trying to be a smart ass but....like you said.... in your opinion...maybe some do think it's ok to freeze. maybe some don't get out on a boat too often to chase dhu etc. and tailor is what they like and can get and only get out to fish once in a blue moon.
same sort of debate I guess about taking the freezer up north etc.
some think it's "rape and pillage" some think I'll feed the family for a while with frozen fillets (rather than buy from Coles during the year....or eat at Mcd!)
I believe the "enough is enough" cut off point is where the law says so.

Iterally just finished off
Literally just finished off last year's 20kg of fillets. It's lasted us over a year and has made some great meals. So don't have to buy the crap from Coles etc. As far as the Tailor are concerned good on em. A great feed there and fresh is best. My mouth was watering looking at that fresh feed.

its always good to show restraint
but if you haven't exceeded the bag limits it should be all good, those that wanta keep less then that will help to maintain fish stocks

In the past have brought back 20kg from NW
And can state that not one gram was wasted - all consumed and made some amazing meals, vacuum packing greatly increases both the freezing quality of the fillets and removes the possibility of freezer burn
Similarly when the gummies are on I will take a few good sized ones as they freeze so well and kids love em
As for dimersals - will only ever take my limit and often less than my legal limit............and always use a release weight and slow retreive technique to seek to avoid barotrauma.
I personally hate the taste of tailor but each to their own

The guys were fishing, got a great feed between them, and good on em!
No limits exceeded what the problem?
When we go out, we go for our limit, Dhu's, baldies, pinks etc.
Stuff buying fish, gee it cost enough to run a boat and buy the gear!
Fish within the limits and I have no issue with people bagging out, treat the fish humainly, look after your catch and dont waist it.
I have a bigger issue with people that catch and release after they have got their limit, mostly with the snapper in the sound, released to the sharks.

personally, this sort of stuff is maybe my least favourite sort of thread on here.
I freeze fish to bring home from up north, I freeze fish from the islands.
I have a big family who eat a fair bit of fish plus give a fair bit away.
If a stranger came up to me on the ramp and lectured me about how many I needed and what was I going to do with it, most of us Id think wouldnt view that as good manners?

yeah couple of guys here have
yeah
couple of guys here have nailed it. All good under the legal limit
but in all I think the wastage gets me. (pics of coral bay bins with half filleted fish etc made my blood boil)
Have been filleting a long time so I don't waste there. take the wings off larger fish and sometimes keep the heads/frames for crab bait. My fish(if it doesn't get eaten fresh) is vac sealed and frozen straight away so no freezer burn and always keeps perfect in the chest freezer.(yep sea-kem still have tiny bit of goldband left from north .......will be perfect when I do eat it though !)
it's a learning curve ....so no-one gets all of this the first time they go fishing.
My biggest waste is the fuel that goes into my 2banger !
ooops......also the octo jigs that I left from getting buried on my PE2 gear around Bernier island. (does that count as waste ?)

The tailor poster to his credit was deliberate in detailing the amount of fishos / tailor / sizes etc .. jeez , he most probably had his solicitors look at the draft copy and then had it signed off by the CEO prior to posting to alleviate any grief .. however still finds himself having his conduct questioned

The final reply is
There is no intended correlaton to any previous posts. Tailor are simply a species I am fishing for a lot at the moment. I think
that discussion around capture numbers is healthy and even desirable. I freeze a few fish too when on trips away to provide family with some quality table fish. The Tailor I catch are of a good size so for me personally 3 fish is enough to give 1 or 2 away. 1 fillet each is enough for us. I always let the real big ones go. I would rather take fewer fish and go again sooner. I am aware that not everybody has the flexibility that I do to fish often. For me personally I rarely even go close to the bag limits by choice. I am certainly not detracting from those that do take the limit on occasion. But I think their is nothing wrong with asking people's opinions

All good, no rules broken, Im sure I will get the same posative feed back and encouragement if for instance I take 5 mates out on my boat tonight and put up a post boasting 24 sized pinks kept, cant get upset if its within the rules
I see no problem with beachsoul rasing this topic, seperatly and merely putting his pov across. You can always tell a fishing brag or report post that gets the thumbs up from the masses by the weight of numbers replying...

can i take this thread off
can i take this thread off topic slightly?
We caught some tailor on the weekend - was on the way back from Rotto and saw some fish chopping up (get it- choppers haha -old one eh?) some baitfish in behind stragglers - just had a bit of fun on some spin gear and got two on board in a few minutes - chucked them straight back as I had never eaten them before and wasnt thinking 2 would go too far anyway
So my question is - what is the best way to cook them? - assume they are similar to herring in flesh type/oil levels?
cheers

Cooking tailor
Just drop them in a frying pan with some butter, either filleted of whole fish if they are just legal size.
The flesh is very soft and bruises easily so doesn't go to well with freezing

never targeted them before but we often see them on our way out (or home) around the drop off at Chidley point in the river (where it goes from 8 knots to wide open throttle if heading up river!) and might have a crack at them next time with the flick rods

As long
As long as you stick to bag limits, all good.
We have seen people get upset about Marlin and sailfish being kept but that is a personal opinion. Also some people hate seeing black bream and mulloway being killed and again that is just how they feel about certain species.
We have quite strict bag limits in WA that i feel are good enough for every one to get a feed. Many factors come to play on how many fish you keep. For me i don't get out that much so if i can fill a bag limit and am certain it will get eaten then i will do so .
I have no problems seeing a table covered with Tailor, Herring , squid etc as long as its not wasted. One thing members could do is add a small amount of info to a picture so others don't jump on the thread with negative comments about size, amount etc.
This is not directed at anyone , just saying . Cheers Grant .

Nothing wrong with keeping
Nothing wrong with keeping your bag limit. The only reason it looks like there's heaps taken is they are all together. If 9 different people post their bag of 8 noone woould even notice, but putting 9 people's bag of 8 together in the one photo and some people get a bit heated. Still the same amount of fish caught, but different perspectives. I think the bag limits are reasonable, and only 2 tailor 50cm+ are allowed per person, so it's not like a whole heap of big tailor are being taken.
Tailor are also a reasonably fast growing fish (I think), so stocks are renewable given time, not like Bream etc. which are slow growing.

Nothing wrong with keeping
Nothing wrong with keeping your bag limit but then again I just like the thrill of catching and will quite happily share the catch with the deckies/brother or my folks I think if somone had a word to me at the ramp over the fish that I caught he at the very least would get a drenching while hoseing the boat or might get bumped of the jetty (of course by accident)

I wont lie, I don't like
I wont lie, I don't like seeing one or 2 people in a group taking their bag limit but ya gotta look at it like they are geting some fish for their family, for example I will get about 10 herring and keep a few for bait and the rest will be kept for a bit of a feed between me and my Oma. I treat fishing as a sport the same as basketball or footy except I can get a feed from it.. But all the more power to the people who get their bag limit and feed the family..

Lots of fish
I agree that seeing so many dead fish kinda hit a little bit of a nerve. it is probably a whole school wiped out. i think that is why beachsoul was upset. on the other hand the guys did nothing wrong and were within the law and you can't blame them for it.
can someone confirm if it's true that you can fillet tailor and put each fillet in a sealed bag individually and freeze it this way? a guy at work told me you can do it this way and the meat wont spoil.
I caught a big tailor once and threw it back because i knew i couldnt eat it all and thought that you couldnt freeze them. i sound like a sad old loner now.
Give me a fish and I will eat for a day, teach me to fish and I will starve to death.
