Marine Qualifications

I'm currently doing my restricted coxswains (doing the proper thing when the course becomes available) and thought I'd do a bit of research to see how many people have qualifications above their RST, be it Coxswains, 5, 4 etc.  Also just wondering how difficult it becomes down the track, with the orals etc..  I guess it all comes down to who you have as your examiner?

Master 5

Tue, 2010-06-01 20:19

Along with Jeff,I've got a Master class 5 and Med 2, though unlike his my Med 2 is long out of date.

If you put the time in doing the course the orals can be a real breeze. When I did mine I hadn't been near a school room for 30+ years and for the first couple of weeks it all went over my head but thankfully it started to come good and the exams were a push over. But when it came down to the orals I was very nervous and failed first go, resat a week later and it was as easy as pie.

He asked lots of question on general give way, weather and lights/shapes.

Quals

Tue, 2010-06-01 20:47

Have had my coxswains for about 15 years, Part 1 commercial dive ticket, heavy vehicle licence, chemical application ticket, senior first aid, but now the only time I get away from the desk is to get a coffee.

GF's mum is always gloating

GF's mum is always gloating because she has a coxwains  or master ticket and some kind of hardcore radio operator's license.

Got mine when I was 19 when I was crayfishing, also used it to run a tug up north for a wee while and charter boats up and down the coast and abrohlos. But that was in a past life now I just use it to help out few people I know on my weeks off

Tue, 2010-06-01 21:20

I've sat Master 5, MED2 and coxswains orals and all were pretty easy, but I had studied a bit beforehand. My coxswains were done in under 15 minutes but others who went through got grilled for over a hour and sent out to study up. I know a guy who does the orals and he said if you are correct and confident straight up it is easy, if you trip and stumble, they will go more in depth and ask more questions.

You'll find most examiners loosely ask the same questions but some will expect a more in depth answer than others. Always have the Rules of the Road and the Collision Regs (lights, shapes, sounds, restricted visability, who gives way, action to take etc) down pat and you should be fine.

As for what changes as you go through, they always spend time on the basics as stated above, then it really is the specifics of the ticket you're going for. My Master 5 had a lot of stability, weather (in particular cyclones), ship masters responsibilities, radar and coastal navigation questions. Your coxswains will be mainly rules of the road and colregs, plus a little basic seamanship, probably a knot or 2 and maybe even a little chart/position fixing questions.

Mon, 2010-06-07 19:12

I did my Coxswains in the classroom, while I did some of my Master 5 by open learning but there were some modules they make you attend class for. I also did my MED2 by open learning but all of these were done on boats with some pretty switched on people to help. If you have a marine background you shouldn't have much trouble doing it solo, however the good thing about classrooms is they make sure you know what you need to know to pass.
Best bet is to call Challenger TAFE in Freo and see what they say, it will all depend on which ticket you are going for.
Bear in mind that there is currently a move by AMSA to get people off of State issued tickets (Master 5, etc) and onto a Australia wide tickets approved by them. It's currently happening so it may pay to contact them as well and find out the details. Google "tinny to tanker" and you should get some more info.

Pretty sure you can do them by coorspondence with the exams done at Tafe and the orals done at Marine house in Freo or when they head up in the country.

The hardest part is getting enough certified sea time.

Give them a ring and find out.

Hi Adam,

I was interested in who you were going your course with and what you thought of it?

Coxswain Blue over here

Thu, 2010-09-30 09:05

Did mine through the Coast Guard, (AVCGA) over here its called Coxwains Blue Cert. - 15nm coastal/open water restriction.

You can put all for your seatime gathered over your life, as long as witnessed, commercial and private, even deckie work and watch shifts on larger vessels.

Hi Mike

Fri, 2010-10-01 16:59

Hi Mike,

The restricted was extremely boring to be honest, it was just the RST all over again and the only real difference I noticed was learning the lights and what the different horn blasts meant.  We did get to use a kailis 8m twin screw to practice with which was probably the best bit.

I've enrolled in my full coxswain and got all my books and start in the next few weeks.  The only crap part is the 5-10pm Monday to Wednesday after work, going to be some long days.
