Port Phillip bay is good if

Port Phillip bay is good if you can get out on a boat. Some good snapper, gummys and big flathead to be caught. For shore based stuff you really need to head either down Mornington peninsula way or west towards Geelong. Landbased the bay in most metro areas has either been heavily fished or has effluent running into it.

Depends if you're looking to catch and release or fishing for a feed, but you get a few people fishing the Yarra, although personally I wouldn't eat anything that came out of there. Western Port Bay has some good fishing, but obviously you'll have to travel a bit further to get there. If you're heading that way you'll get good fishing off the beach all the way through Gippsland for mullet, trevally and salmon.

If you're into freshwater I used to fish around Lake Eildon and the Goulburn river a bit and you should pick up some trout.

Gear wise, pretty much the same as we use over here.

 www.anglingvictoria.com  has

www.anglingvictoria.com  has a wealth of information.

Try the Gippsland lakes for the EP, bream and other bread n butter species.

Mallacoota beach and surround surf beaches for salmon, gummy and mullet.

This is the best time to hit PPB for the snappers are spawing and come in huge numbers. Best part is, there is bugger all current at 8-25m, so all you need is a tiny ball sinker to get your bait down. Plus you can try soft plastic and micro jigging there.

Squid is found most places from mornington to Western port bay and can be caught landbased provided water is clear.

Upper yarra has some wild stream trouts during winter.

Good Luck!

Going to be in the city?

Going to be in the city? Plenty of bream in the Yarra and around the docks for a bit of fun. Small pinkies and some flathead off the jetties around the top end of the bay. Pretty hard fishing off the shore near the city in general really. If you have a car though there's lots better places to drive to.

 Make sure to listen to

Make sure to listen to community radio station 97.7 FM on Friday mornings 7-9am. Hosted by Lee Rayner it has a full wrap up around the whole state plus heaps more info. Lee does another one on Saturday with Rexy on SEN that's ok too. Land based you'll be looking at snapper on the eastern shore piers and rocks during big blows, squid from Frankston down, salmon on the Bass Straight beaches and Dromana down. KG at night down that way too. Or spend way too much time chasing Jewies in the Yarra. Western port has some land based for gummies, snapper and jewies.
