Mulloway in the Swan

 Hey guys,

Just wondering where is my best bet of catching mulloway on light tackle Up stream in the Swan River.?

Also what lures are good for mulloway?

They are definitely in the swan canning area, can hear them croaking in the deeper water when snorkeling and diving, usually areas with deep pylons get the most croaking then just an empty area.

never know your luck, they are croaking for a reason cause they can sense and feel something near eg. "me" when i swim near trumpeters and grunters you can hear little croaks from them but barely, they just stay in one spot near the rocks, i bet when i go away for like 10 mins and its quiet they will be on the bite again so why not a mulloway right.

yea. u might be right. i dunno much about the croaking part but this old bloke who boasted to me about catching heaps of mulla in his time told me this. when they croak they are mating so they won't bite. but once they stop croaking they will eat. haha!

im leaning towards mating/mating calls, over "sensing something" . ask yourself. if a mulloway croaks in Mosman Bay, and no one is around to hear it, does it still croak?

Mulloway

Mon, 2011-01-31 19:26

I only moved over from Vic just over a year ago but the best tips for gettin em in the Yarra / Maribyrnong system was after a new moon when the tide is at its weakest and with fresh squid. Mosman Bay was mentioned earlier and I have actually heard this from a fisho at my local. My mate has his boat moored there and the water definitely looks good. Deep and full of bream etc for the Mulloways dinner!

Mon, 2011-01-31 20:25

we find more success on live baits over here. my understanding is that over east you guys get a lot more smaller mulloway? under 10kg?

Squid for Mulloway

Tue, 2011-02-01 21:55

Live baits work well over east as well, just had more success on fresh caught squid. The fish over east can be any size, from schoolies in Port Phillip Bay to thumpers in the Yarra / Maribyrnong system and the Barwon river down near Geelong. From the surf they get huge all the way up the east coast right up past Brisbane.

Between Nov-Feb Swan River mulla's are breeding...croaking is calling their mates.

one day would be good to see these breeding fish protected during summer and some restocking happen.

I agree with u on that 1 mate! In my opinion its no different from the pinkies in the sound or the sambos at the barges, well theres is a difference, theres already alot less mulloway then sambos or pinkies!
