New sounder advice

Hey all

Am replacing my sounder and after some advice recommendations/ info... Ive got a good humminbird GPS already installed so am after a straight sounder instead of the combo units.

Am looking at spending about 1000-1500 (preferably to the lower side of that).

It will be getting used to do a bif of everything, and ideally Id like it to be able to read the ground pretty well at decent speeds travelling between spots etc so Im guessing this means a better than average transducer? Or am I mistaken? (sounders are a pretty new area to me- I had just been using the old furuno colour sounder that came with the boat for the last year or so).

Is it possible to get a semi decent headset (like a hummingbird 778cx or furuno fcv620 or similar) and beef it up with a stronger transducer? (they seem to come with a 83/200khz as standard). Will this make any difference or do you need a better headset to be able to make the most of a stronger

what the difference/ benefits of in hull vs transom mounting? Ive got a yalta 555 (fibreglass) so is it possible to mount them in the hull anyway? Am I right in assuming that if I mount it in the hull (if that’s possible) then there is less interference from the outboard so it will read better at higher speeds? Is there any other benefits to this?

What would you guys recommend in that price range (head unit and transducer strength etc) or is that price range a bit cheap for what Im after?

Sorry, I know it’s a lot of questions, but as I said, this area is pretty new to me so just doing my homework

Cheers!

gday mate,

I would personaly stay with a furuno, fcv 620 0r bigger, I am sure you can beef up the trannie if you need to, the fiberglass is a bonus for larger in hull transducers, you wont go wrong with furuno, drop in to Taylor marine and they will let you know all possibilities with transducers etc

The Furuno FCV620 is an awesome unit and the standard transom mount 50/200khz 600w transducer is very good.

The Plastic 600w mini wetbox transducer is quite cheap ie around $200 and we've sold a few. The wetbox is a variable dead rise setup so it will work but just keep in mind that your boat movement will cause airation/bubbles so your sounder picture can get breaks in it regardless.

Either transducer will be good and the FCV620 a little ripper.
