We've done quite well pulling

Mon, 2012-10-29 16:51

We've done quite well pulling up to any of the isolated reefs with whitewater breaking over them.

Just pull in close and cast into the wash.

You'll need to move about till you find one holding fish.

Just troll the beaches till

Mon, 2012-10-29 20:49

Just troll the beaches till you find them when the easterlies blow hard, dont worry about gettin up early either we leave them on the bite midday sometimes, there is reef lumps on the beaches north of mindarie that are worth a try as a starting point and the beaches change year to year exposing new structure sometimes so go explorin, I  just sat imaged them up (nearmaps), otherwise beaches  south of that are still worth a troll and there good size ones being caught there also atm. Any exposed reef system offshore is worth a try, just gota watch them swells if its up. Iv been doing well ona close to shore reef that doesnt see any swell so its sweet for me and the young bloke to troll, love nothin more than to see the lures out back on glass water gettin smashed. Suss the reefs out so you can safely fish them then just troll till you find the fish, nuthin beta than seein tailor get aero smashin surface lures out the back then the 4lb peelin off haha. Sometimes after hookin and  boating fish they go off the bite and certainly when you drop or release them they will go off the bite so keep persisting till u entice and find them again. Havent really done any casting at foamy offshore reefs but been told thats how to get the monsters, just never turn ur back on the swells. But as far as trolling is concerned shallow bibbed lures like green bomber 15a and crystal minnows work all the time but we only use them when its hard to get surface strikes (dirty water or over cast) otherwise the storm chug bug popper in the cbs08 size is all we use 99% of the time and the 11 size trolls good too and is also a bit heavier if you want to cast far. Halco twisties work good, just get to a speed till they just skip on the surface. We dont try much else other than the chug bugs cos they a work and float which is good when doin u turns and on an unattended rod when the boat has stopped trollin, even got a few back that were bitten off. I have plenty of other lures that work, the waxwings do troll but ultra slow boat speed and sliders like the xrap walk like a bit of rod in hand action applyed but its far easier and more productive using lures that work by leavin the rods in the rod holders. We had a lure test session once (constant double hookups) and every lure in my box worked except the richter plug so that got tossed over the side (prob better as a cast-retrieve lure). Weed on the lure means no fish so by choppin off the downward facing hook on the rear trebble (front trebble removed unless its maccie season) it pretty much eliminates any weed hook up too (surface lures) and I crush the barbs so the hooks remove easy and dont risk awkward hook removal if unlucky to cop one. Think Iv covered it....hope you get into some, theres a few around

Stragglers Reef produces well

Tue, 2012-10-30 09:59

Just cast into the wash, recommend that one person remains at the wheel at all times with engine running as the more you get the lures into the wash the better the results but it does place you in dodgy position if you are not alert.  Have also had some success the ocean side (northern end) of Garden Island in the reef breaks there and you can get on the inside of those reefs making it much safer but only early morning as they seem to shut down quickly as the sun gets up

More keen on trolling .  I assume trolling along the edge of the reef works to.  I have given casting into the wash a go before but found I kept losing lures.

Cheers for the info I reckon I will give trolling around the islands a go.

Thu, 2012-11-01 12:20

Not really that effective, if you're out at the reefs you might aswell cast into the wash coz thats where they are holding up, the only time I've seen them swim out from the reef is when they chase your lures down, you can't get your lures close enough to the reef trolling. What lures were you using? Try the 1oz richter plugs, just make sure you dont have too much slack line when the lure hits the water.

Last time I was using Smiling Jacks lures.  So you reckon trolling for tailor just doesn't work?  What about over some of the deeper reefs on a day with no swell? Sorry about all the questions.

Yeh of course it works just depends where you are fishing, if its submerged reef like the ground tim o mentioned I would troll, I just figured when you said troll next to the reef you were talking about exposed washy reef. Next time I head out I'll get photos and maybe video and I'll post an "offshore tailor guide" as a lot of ppl have pm'd me in the last couple weeks regarding my last tailor post

Thu, 2012-11-01 16:50

The reefs i fish are exposed, some dont get big swell (outer reefs dampen it) and some i only fish when the swell is down, but always troll, I only cast if i havent hooked up and someone else is fighting their fish. I suss the reefs out in good visibility first that way I know can safely troll nice and close, but Im lookng to hit some of the more dangerous reefs with good whitewater for the 80cm+ monsters as well as kings and tuna which I have reason to believe they are there on the 3 mile reefs atm yahoo!

Ah ok my mistake. You could troll around the spots where I fish for hours and not get a touch, one cast into the wash and bam fish on.

Theres a good fishing wa episode where steve explains how to fish the wash for tailor using bait but we all know thats no fun.

Yep, seen it and me and a mate headed out there the week after, trolled a few up but I never persited with casting into the wash on the 'hairy' swell reefs but agree and understand that the cover.is ideal for the monsters and casting in is the only option, I just like trollin cos its easy, cruzin around suckin a brew then bzzzzz the rods go off!
