The ol 850 is probably the most bomb proof cheaper reel you can get.....have boated several sambos before going hollywood and no worried at all....cheap Shimano's (more expensive than the Penn) fall apart under similar duress......Top end Shimanos arent bad though....................

about $100

I have a chinese 950 & 850 as well as a USA 850 and spare spools.  To be honest I prefer using the chinese ones over the USA they feel easier to wind and the handle is alot more ergonomic.  I have had them for a few years mostly used for surf fishing with mono and boat fishing with 50lb braid and I rate them for the best value for money reel going around and tough as nails I abuse mine.

The USA model has a drag clicker which is very handy I dont know why alot more reels dont have this

Be patient if you are looking to get one.

Was in BCF a few weeks ago torturing myself about whether to get the 850 spinfisher for myself at $220 but thankfully chickened out.

Went back in a week later for bait and saw one reduced to $99, so asked what was wrong with it and why it had been returned. Shop assistant laughed at me, said that they were all reduced and showed me the enormous stock pile of them they had and said they just wanted to get rid of some.

Snapped up one reel quick, and came back in a few days later after I'd been paid, hoping to buy another 2 and they were back to 220

For me one of their main advantages along with their durability is the line capacity, they have very deep spools, and you have to buy a reel almost twice as big in some of the other brands to be able to spool as much line as the penn will take. Feel like writing to Penn though, and letting them know that I would gladly pay them some more money if they would put a bloody line clip on it for when the reel's not in use.

If you are after one I was at "Compleat Angler" in Gosnells yday, which I only just discovered as it's a tiny little shop and they were doing Penn specials. Didn't look at the rod combo's so can't tell you much but the 850's were going for $130. Plus the shop assistants in there will talk to you and make sure that you get what you're looking for rather than making you feel like you are disturbing them from their minimum wage slumber.

Line clip

Mon, 2011-02-14 21:32

Agree kingit with alot of the crap service in ALOT of fishing shops. That's why I buy online as much as I can. As for the line clip if you haven't seen them you can get a plastic 3/4 cicle called a spool clip which will clamp down on your line to stop it coming off when in storage perfect for your penns and any reel where the line is too big to fit under the line clip

Retail service.

Tue, 2011-02-15 09:16

It might just be because your in perth that the retail service isnt as good. Back at home when i worked at BCF in geraldton being a fishing town i came across alot of good poeple, who knew what they were talking about, and worked with some really well informed die-hard fishermen. It may be that lack of enthusiasm and passion for the sport that results in poor customer service. Which i find very sad :(

FAL Balcatta has still a few

Wed, 2011-02-16 11:26

FAL Balcatta has still a few brand new Penn 190 overhead reels for $35 or $40 for ones with a spool full of yellow line.

Caught  a few fish on the rod and reel as well!

Penn is good and durable, I have had a Senator 4.0 for over 25 years, caught some serious big fis on it and it still performs like new.

I purchased one together with some other fishing tackle and the savings are substantial overall
