Problems with Navman Fish 4500 at depth

Just wondering if anyone has used a Navman Fish 4500 at moderate depth?  Say over 100m on the standard tranny?

Im finding mine loses the bottom as soon as I get over the 100m mark, and is patchy even from around 85m.  This is on 200khz, 50 doesnt seem any/much better.

Dont know whether to trade up the sounder or the tranny, or if this is just a configuration issue.  Saw the HDS post up there about getting into 300m with a 600watt tranny so thinking I should be fine with 100m.

They advertise that the unit can get depth at 1000m and I have heard of others in the states using them at around 450ft+ with no worries, so wondering if its a setting or something?

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

hi Dan i have had mine for about 5years and all i can get out of mine is 180m and that is it ,i turn my gain up to 15/16 once i have gone over the 80m mark and i get a better picture of the bottom, a great sounds for the shallow stuff {10m -60m} but over the 150 it just doesnt cut it,this is with the 600w, i dont know any one with the 1kw so im not sure on that one how deep you can go

i use bottom lock on every thing out side i use 6m zone and in side i use the 2m lock

hope this helps Dan

Are you talking about

Are you talking about cruising or slowly sounding around? I can sound around with mine in 100m no probs, it's fairly patchy at the derwent (200) but can still pick up the structure just. Sounds like you need to adjust some settings. It's not a top end sounder but will do the job in most applications when set up correctly.

Yeah talking about just sounding around.  Tried to go out to the barges like a month ago but couldnt even see the bottom when stationary.

Im sure its just a setting.  I havent played with it that much yet.  Its in Auto mode at the moment. You reckon just crank up the gain?
