Reel Advice Daiwa or Shimano is there anything else?

Looking for a new reel to go with my 9' foot lemax president royal for chucking lures at tailor/salmon. Have looked at FJ stradic 5000 and 4000 Daiwa Ballistic so far. Just wondering what else there is around the $250 mark or cheaper that can handle dragging big tailor out their reefy lairs. Keeping in mind the reel might on the rare occasion when i go on a charter be used for light jigging and working plastics. Thanks guys

$250  is great price for a reel to catch Tailor and Salmon, you could get away with a much cheaper reel.... You really dont need to spend the $1000 price tag so many are spending these days. Just keep in mind the drag pressures you wll be running, for Tailor and Salmon you are probably only a couple of KGs of drag pressure, so the reel wont be doing much hard work at all. If jigging in deep water or trying to pull big GTs out of reefy areas you may need a better quality reel that can handle the 10kg of drag etc .... The current trends to buy these high tech $1000 reels are a bit of a wank in my opinion. Fine if you have the money but if you dont a $250 reel will pull in most fish swimming with ease. Including most GTs, Sailfish, Small Marlin etc .... Having said that, I love good blingy gear myself, however it is mostly overkill IMO.

Im sure others here will give you some great suggestions on what you can buy for your $250,

I agree... I'll doubt i'll ever own a stella

Sat, 2012-07-14 22:09

I'll more then likely run 20lb braid on it- I've just gotten sick of buying reels between the 50-100 mark and them not lasting for anymore then a few years. Would rather spend a bit more hoping it will last a good 5 years+ (Was using a daiwa regal 4000 bri and that only had 4kg drag... feels like its made out of plastic) not that the reel i'm looking for will much work other then my annual trip to kalbarri a couple of times a year and maybe a salmon hunt over winter.

Na i rekon the stradic fj is the best reel you can buy in that price bracket, the freams is also worth looking at but still recommend the stradic. I wouldnt recommend anything else til you get to the 350 price bracket then its the sustain or caldia.

Stradic

Mate, Im using the exact same rod.. (my favourite)

I switch between a stradic and stella (both shimano) depending on what Im chasing...  Both reels are a fantastic match up for that rod..

PS... I LIVE in Carnarvon

Hi mate,The most popular reel

Sun, 2012-07-15 11:18

Hi mate,

The most popular reel that consistantly goes through the door to match either the Lemax 9ft or the Fishing WA 9ft would be the Shimano Stradic 4000/5000 FJ. They run ample drag pressures for the style of fishing you've mentioned and feel nice and light to consistantly turn the handle as you crank back baits/stickbaits/poppers.

The other reel to consider if willing to lash out a few extra dollars would be the Pflueger Patriarch 9540. Ultra light and comes with a spare Aluminium spool that has a bigger spool capacity.

We can offer Fishwreck discounted prices on both of these reels.

Cheers

I've used a few Stradics and performance wise they are fantastic. They should last you five years too if you look after them. Having siad that for a long lasting reel that is another brand is the Penn Slammer. Right now they are being cleared out along with the Spinfishers to make way for the new Spinfisher V. I got a few for $85 with 300 yards of braid delivered. Now that's cheap. Performance wise they are not as good as a Stradic but are built like a tank and will last longer than a Stradic IMO.

Mind you, if you can wait, the new Spinfisher V looks pretty good and is set to rival the Saragosa.

I gave the Raremium 4000 a test in Broome in May, I was very surprised with this reel.

It pumps out 11kg of drag and it took 300m of 40lb Accudepth(Overkill due to the rod). while weighing absolutely nothing. perfectly light for the Missus to use.

The reel knocked off everything from Quenies and Jacks to GT's and Spaniards all on spin landbased.

Rarenuim is a seriously good piece of equipment.

It may be a little light on a 9ft president though, I had the 4000 on a Lemax Black rose and it was a perfect combo.

Sun, 2013-01-13 21:51

I've got the Abu Soron stx60, awesome reel. 11 bearing, carbon drag, only has 8 kg drag but it does the job. From memory it was around $250. You could try the Abu Orra sx, bit cheaper, smooth as that way you can get some decent braid. I'de reccomend Daiwa Shinobie, thin as, great for shallow spools.

G'day mate, you rate the shinobi hey, I've found it's got the shock load resistance of cotton, couldn't agree with you more on the Soron though, plenty of bearing support and CF drag straight out of the box great value reel.
