Shimano Sienna 2500FD. Had mine for a good few years now and still going strong with the odd service. On occasion have opened it up to find a heap of sand but doesn't affect performance

Hey mate,

Honestly sand is a destroyer, doesn't matter if the reel is $15 dollars or $1500 dollars, if you get sand in it there is a very high chance it'll stop working as intended. If you keep it out of the sand and rinse the salt water off after your trips they will last you forever with the occasional service.

We have a few combo's that you might find to be what you are looking for. The ugly stick balance combos come in at around that $90-100 dollar mark for a reel and a rod and they are pretty reliable (keep them out of the sand! haha).

Cheers

 Had an older model shimano

Had an older model shimano symetre for a few years and it performed flawlessly, sits between sienna and saros in the lineup. Cost me around 130 though so a bit over your budget. Another good little reel is the daiwa laguna, abused 2 for a few years and performed well. They're only 69 bucks these days. I would get 3 symetres and ask for a discount to get the price closer to your 100 target. Good luck!

cheers guys all good ideas, i look after my reels but thses ones will belong to a 7 and 4 year old so i have no doubt they will be put in sand at some stage or another haha

i know sand is a kilelr but i had a daiwa crossfire which was $80 the rod holder fell over and a small wave washed over it and it was compleely stuffed just like that, that reall shouldnt happen

As above any reel will suffer

Mon, 2014-08-18 21:05

As above any reel will suffer is dropped in the sand - add water washing sand in then they will suffer more from this than dryish sand.  If this happens the sooner it is dismantled and cleaned the better. a good clean and re-oil/grease should bring it back to like new if done soon.  Did a few reels of a mates and couldn't believe how much crap and sand was in them, apart from the start of some corrosion I got them working quite well again.

The cheaper reels are probably less well sealed but I understand not wanting to spend too much on the kiddies.

if theyre guaranteed to get sandy then i wouldnt even spend $100 on them. should be able to ask people possibly even on this forum to donate or buy something around the $20 mark if its going in the sand. Otherwise get the Sienna but supervise them when they use it to keep it operational. I treated my sienna like rubbish and technically it still "operates"

A bit out of left field but....

What about a couple of them?

Would handle sand and salt water.

I think they run at about $48 in a combo with rod 6ft.

Only downside is you will need to learn how to fish one to teach the kids.

Cheers,

Have a look on Torpedo7, their prices are generally decent I've found and they're having a big sale ATM. $9 flat rate shipping I pretty reasonable too and don't have to wait long.

i have had my seinna 4000FD

Wed, 2014-08-20 20:36

i have had my seinna 4000FD for a few years, mostly jetty or rock fishing.  Never been cleaned , reel is still going strong but i got it in a combo and my mum changed sides in the garage and ran over the rod :(  for $79 bucks from BCF on sale almost every week i am very temped to buy another combo with the 2500 reel and a 6kg rod and which them back, as the rod the 4000 is on at the moment is a bit light for it.  This combo started out as a cheapy that i would lend other people but i started using it more and more and eventually started handing them my abu combo (3x more pricey) as the seinna is just so much smoother.  I wouldn't buy another reel unless i was going for something massive or an overhead.

Hope whatever you go for lasts you many stories.
