Seriously?!

Just seen this on Perth-Now, I do understand people becoming frustrated at the Goverment doing little about the shark problem

were facing Atm. But this is the sorta stuff is just blatantly stupid; the sorta stuff thats gonna lock up our coast to those who are actually, recreationally fish. I mean if

there gonna do it atleast do it behind closed doors :D, dont boast about it at the expense of others and the future.

Wow

Sat, 2012-11-10 22:44

Wow, 1 billion sharks per year get strung up, finned then dumped back in the ocean and no one gives a shit. I do not like this footage or what these guy's did to the shark it is poor form on their behalf, And their big mistake was to let the video go public.

PS: yes it has already been posted up on this site.

well some (like yourself) are posting comments on fishing forums. others post comments and links on social media sites such as facebook. some start campaigns to rally local governments.

obviously we aren't doing enough to stop them, as they are still finning sharks, but to say no one cares is ridiculous.

I think the point Grant was making was there is major inaction. Everybody loves to save the whales and everybody cares (especially the media) But come to the nasty man eating sharks..........

Sun, 2012-11-11 19:41

It seems the media really has jumped on the 'save the sharks' bandwagon as of late though. Just saw this story on the news. Seriously wouldn't have though there would have been this much outroar about the killing of a single shark.

Seems times are changing for the better, with more and more of general population begining to understand that sharks also need to be preserved.

Yes

Sun, 2012-11-11 20:13

Yes that is pretty much the point i was getting at. Also the fact that to get any attention at the moment all you need to do is add the word "SHARK", and all of a sudden there is the same debate about " Kill them all" VS "Dont hurt the poor sharks"

I in no way like or respect what these guy's have done. Its the media hype that bothers me considering there are a lot more problems in this world that go on every day and don't get the attention that sharks are getting by the media.

Sat, 2012-11-10 23:11

All animals great and small should be treated with respect. This is done on a large boat with a davit arm off the deck, prob on commercial dive or fishing boat as she's got a swing thru transom and ss rails along the outside ie sliding pots- PERTH now _ this stinks of politics_ easy enough to track Paul down

I wasn't aware that whaler sharks are protected once they hit 2m in length (south of Kalbarri)?  Or did I misinterpret what the author wrote on perth now?

Right you are;

Due to overfishing of some whaler shark species, a maximum size limit of 700 mm (interdorsal fin length) applies to whaler sharks (Family Carcharhinidae) caught in the West Coast and South Coast Bioregions (see illustration).

This equates to a shark of about 1.8 metres total length. Importantly, sharks larger than this often have high concentrations of heavy metal compounds (including mercury) in their flesh and are not suitable for human consumption.

Common whaler sharks caught in the West Coast and South Coast bioregions include: dusky shark, bronze whaler, sandbar (thickskin) shark, bull shark, spinner shark and tiger shark.

my take on it was the shark was dead before being strung up to be bled and cleaned (unlike the author of the column would have you believe). then someone hits it with a bat thinking their funny (unsure how you torture a dead shark?). you know you can buy such bats at fishing stores for this such reason. i think paul the author is the reason media outlets have no credibility...misleading in my opinion

Jimmy the shark was very much alive as the author correctly states. The previous thread titled ABUSE shows the video.

Wed, 2012-11-14 10:26

I've killed more sharks than I can remember mate. And the most humane way to dispatch them is a baseball bat to the head a couple of times.  then off with the head, fins and tails. A quick slice up the guts and then into the esky on ice. I've seen a shark twitching for over an hour without its head on and yeah i thought it was funny too

even when the bigger whalers were fair game, not much other than going to town with a baseball bat will put them nighty-night.

Worked at Robbs Jetty abbatior for a few years , even after being  cut , hung , gutted and skinned the muscles and legs would still twitch around...however I'd call them fairly dead at that stage

I use a priest ( base ball bat )

Sun, 2012-11-11 13:29

I use a priest to put fish down just like they do at the slaughters (bolt gun) as it is the only way to quickly dispatch fish other than a fish spike. One quick hit is the only way to deal with toothy critters like Spanish macs, wahoo, sharks to avoid damage to boat and the safety of the crew. What I saw in the video / pictures is poor form and is not acceptable among the fishing community.

If you lads bothered to look

Sun, 2012-11-11 13:32

If you lads bothered to look at the footage, the shark is clearly still alive. With what strength it has left it gives a few kicks at the end. I'm not sure who considers tying a shark up by its head then cutting it down the guts and beating it over the head a quick death!

Not a good look for the general publics perception of fishos ...have no doubt hardline conservationists are going use this type of ammo against the majority of us

and in future years if laws are changed to include " fish " in the animal cruelty act as they seem to be now pushing ...Look out  recreational fishers , as I'm

fairly sure most methods of fishing could possibly be deemed cruel and torturous

Well it's in the papers today

Sun, 2012-11-11 14:37

Well it's in the papers today in big bold colour photo's. Don't worry we'll all be branded rednecks by the green brigade. Thank's Sunday times for your sensationalist crap (Vigilante fishermen are hunting, killing and even torturing sharks) the headline says. Sounds to me like there are hoards of us out there doing this. And why did the "chief reporter" have to mention the shark fishing Rockingham boys? Paper filler methinks. What a rag only good for the comics.

 That article is actually

Sun, 2012-11-11 19:52

That article is actually complete bullshit. I love how the video is called 'Protected Shark Tortured' .

There's no proof that shark was protected. I think heard them say something about 'eating spangos' in the vid, which would lead me to beleive the shark was caught in the north west, where whalers aren't protected. Even if he was within his rights to kill it, they still probably shouldnt have posted the video as it does look quite gruesome and will give other fisherman a bad image. Especially when the media is saying stuff like he's a vigilante fisherman.

Personally I think he's an idiot for keeping it, and i would never keep a shark of that size. a) because of their ecological significance, and b) because of the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in its flesh.

Disgraceful

Wed, 2012-11-14 10:02

It's such a low act to treat any animal that way for what appears to be entertainment. What is equally despicable is how the media milk the story for everything it's worth to ride the wave of "the shark effect" that has been entrenched in the media coverage of late. The headline unfortunately was always going to be there with this story but typically exaggeration is the order of the day!! Low life's all round.
