Penn or Shimano....

There's more than just 2 brands out there.....

I got both....Tiagra 30W and Inter 50VSW

There's also Accurate ATD Platinum, Avet, Alutecnos, Duel, Tiburon.....

The best value is the Tiagras, follow by either the Inters or Accurate ATD for me......

But I need to get a ATD 50 and find out the difference...lol

thats the ATD man. great reel, but if your just shark fishing 2k might not be worth it.

The 30wlrs is pretty decent for sharks, I know the guys from Ifish use em for big Thresher sharks.

Accurate Boss Extreme is similar to the ATD - cheaper tho I think

cheers so would you say a tiagra 50lrs or Internation 50vsw spooled with 50lb mono withh be enough for landbased sharks as i am balloooning of jetties.

or should i go even a 70 or 80 and spool it with 50lb.

so many people say that tehy fit differen ammounts of metres with the 50s

honsu said he only got 700m of 50lb berkley and then seaquest stated he got 1100m of shougun 50lb

ther both the same reels but a different of 400metres more

if a inter 50vsw fits 1000m minium i would dfenitly buy one but who can i no for sure

the specs of the net dont show much of the 50lb

? cheers

Any reason you are not considering running braid

Wed, 2010-11-10 19:14

If the reason you thinking about a 50 is line capacity why not run braid with a mono topshot. That way the 30wlrs would suffice.

Capacity of Tiagra 30wlrs

Wed, 2010-11-10 19:55

I have no actual data but imo if you were to spool a Tiagra 30wlrs with 50lb braid and a 150m topshot of mono you will probably have in excess of 1200m of line of the reel.

If the 30lrs has that capacity of 30lb mono

Wed, 2010-11-10 20:15

it will have a greater capacity of 50lb braid (including a 150m mono topshot).  That being the case, why buy a new reel.  That is what I am trying to say.  Sharks really don't care whether the line is mono or braid.  Smile

I can't help with exact numbers

Wed, 2010-11-10 20:55

But imo you will have in excess of 1200m all up.  Ask your local tackle shop.

i would go the tiagra 50 , but to be honest so many sharks have been landed on light gear and mono. last shark season a good friend of mine landed a 2.5 metre tiger shark off a jetty on a saltist/live fibre combo , alot of people over kill and dont make it fun. i would be sticking with the tiagra 30 and sticking some 24kg mono on it IGFA preferably so you can get as much metres on as possible and a decent rod with the right drag set up and you wont have dramas reeling in anything up to 3 metres , in saying that i dont mean no dramas but you have to be a capable fisherman. to put things into perspective my last shark was a hammer head and i skull dragged that in with a tld 25 + 30lb mono.

just as an idea Salti 30vsw

Fri, 2010-11-12 23:56

just as an idea Salti

30vsw 1525yards/65lb braid

30vsx 775yards/80lb

50vsw 2000yards/80lb braid

50vsx 1100yards/100lb

ive got 2 of the 30vsx and 1 or the 50vsx with those line classes ...

if your on a jetty and a shark can pull out a km of 100lb mate your in more trouble than you realise .. youll never get the line back and more capacity aint going to help you .. in a boat you can chase and manouver the craft .. on a jetty he will go sideways and bust you off on something ..

my opinion .. if you can stand up to 15kg pressure for a while (not knowing how big you are) .. go a 30vsx and spool it with 100lb .. if you cant stop it in the first 400-600m you might as well sunset the drag and try to get your line back ..

in saying that .. only a 14ft+ shark is going to move that amount of line .. and how many of those are you going to find around your jetties that you actually want to keep ??
