Go for a sounder that has good structure resolution, bottom lock and bottom shift. That helps identify fish & bottom structure which low price colour units don't often have.
The Furuno LS-4100 (B&W) has those feature and dual frequency also. $599 including transducer.
To step up to good structure resolution in colour then the Furuno FCV620 is the go. $1465 including transducer.
Very reliable units, popular brand and i know Ryan swear's by Furuno.
