Tackle Shops Port Hedland - Karratha
Submitted by Jelle on Sat, 2012-01-28 11:10
I'm based in Port Hedland so basically my only options to get into some gear (other than internet) are K-mart and Smirkeys. Smirkeys has some good gear but is soo expensive.
I've heard there's a tackleshop down in Karratha, is it worth paying them a visit for say getting my hands on an ofshore spinning rod?

Up and running?
Up and running? Well perhaps partly finished?
You're asking people to send you their address without SSL protection, and that can lead to identity theft. The australian federal privacy regs specifically recommend against doing this.
Next, you're asking people to use their credit cards online without SSL protection, that means that anyone on the internet between the user and your website could take a copy of those card details and start scamming them.
SSL, its encryption fromn the browser to the website, and a guarantee that the people taking your details, are the people that are supposed to be getting them. Its that little padlock you get in your browser when using internet banking and better online shops.
You might want to read this page about SSL certificates and why you have to use them when asking for both people's privacy information, and credit cards:

Maybe you would like to pass that info onto your developers, unsure why they didn't know already!

Try Smirks
They will match any price in Aus(mo tackle) if you ask nicely. Best shop for prices in the Pilbara, better than our shops in Karratha. I sometimes do a run to buy gear for myself and friends.

buy online
I dont think iv ever heard a more blatant lie than you do the run from karatha to port to go to smirkys!!! if thats not a plug i dont know what is!!! theres a small tackle shop (nor west tackle) in the mall on edgar street in port, not a whole lot but if your after tackle and stuff its ok. otherwise, buy online, its the best option by far!!! if your in a hurry theres a huge sports shop in karatha with bulk rods n gear, not as bad as smirkys but the weathers pretty shocking at the moment it might be worth the wait to buy quality online

New in town???
Not that new to know Karratha is spelt with two r's - actually lived in Karratha/Hedland for a total of 21 years, but hey who's counting. And as for blatant lie, maybe you should give Steve Smirke a call and drop him my name - I'm sure he would be accommodating and vouch for me buying gear off him. He has even sent gear to me here in Karratha free of charge, but thats what people do for their mates. For giving his business a plug, he doesn't need my encouragement as he has a monopoly of regular clientele to keep him on his feet. As for Nor-west tackle, I'm sure Mark Allen has shut shop and is focusing on family and his day time job - I guess no one informed you. Obviously in your opinion you only get quality online, I actually thought it was all the same(stupid me). Maybe if you came across with a more positive attitude, people may even be kind enough to give you a reasonable discount at their shops - Happy fishing bud :)

Guessing your not in town
Guessing your not in town anymore mate. Shop in Edgar st closed down 6 months ago.... Sold all stock to the emporium.
Smirkeys is not too bad. Just have to build a relationship and his prices are not too bad. Always willing to have a go at competing with online prices too.

most tackle shops in the
most tackle shops in the north west are becoming more competive againgst the online market if you know what you want and get a price from perth. Both smirkeys and Adventure sports will usually offer you the price plus postage. usually 20 bucks on top.

Ask for price match against
Ask for price match against online sellers, I have managed success on this for some pricey items.
I always try and support the local supplier if its a fair deal, encourage local business and customer relationships.

Just remember that Smirky
Just remember that Smirky also puts alot back into the community as far as sponsorship and support go. Next time you save $10 by buying online maybe you could try asking for a donation towards the local fishing comp and see how you go.

Yeah I'm fairly new to
Yeah I'm fairly new to Hedland. Managed to get my hands on a little 4.2 tinnie and trying to make the most out of my weekly sundaymorning trip...
Already bought a bit of gear from smirkeys, couple of rods and a TLD15. He's always chumped off a bit of the price without me having to explicitly ask for it.
Online is cheaper, and I can do it for reels and such, but a rod I need to be able to hold in my hand before I buy it. Currently looking for one to fit my Stradic 8000FJ and will probably drop by Smirkeys later in the week to see what he's got.
Hints welcome!

I have found the same up here in Kcity
You just have to ask. Once Adam in Adventure sports knows you he will bend backwards to help, and I have heard Smirkey's is the same.
Got instand gratification when I have got the Stella's, Twinpower, Saragosa's and various pricey rods. Hasn't cost me much more than the postage would have, especially with the Stella 8000 SW and 5000. And I got to hold them straight away rather than wait.
I also agree that supporting the local industry helps the communities. Adv Sport supports the 2 big fishing contests and others up here. As for consumables they are more expensive IMO, but a sinker is a sinker, no matter where you get them, ie KMart etc. As for hooks, swivels, lures etc I tend to lean towards quality, so maybe fork out a little extra coin to support local.
