towball

howdy all

i bought a jeep today, but it wasnt untill i got it home that i realised that i cant hook up my boat , due to the tow ball sitting underneath the spare tyre rack.

i am wondering am i able to buy a tow ball with a longer tounge on it, and would it change any of the manufactury rating for the current one or insurance ???

That's a bit ridiculous isn't it! Should be fine ... I don't have a jeep but a small 4wd also my towbar comes out past the tyre having said that I only have a tinny..

The spare or the towbar obviously the spare so the tow bar installer is a DICK! unless factory fitted then chrysler jeep are DICKS! or is it a gas conversion and the spare relocated...either way someones a DICK!

Looks like a Reece style tow

Fri, 2012-02-17 16:58

Looks like a Reece style tow hitch, undo the tow ball and remove the tounge and flip it over. Then put the ball back on, that should lower it enough to get a trailer hitch on.

Looks a bit rusty? maybe its been swimming in the salt.

i dont think you can but just an extension tow bar tongue

Fri, 2012-02-17 17:00

best bet ring a tow bar specialist like towbar city and ask if you can just get an extension,as far as i know tow bars do have a weight rating

Dealer

Fri, 2012-02-17 17:19

Take it back to the dealer and get him to find one that fits and can be used properly. Once he has fitted the one thats on there he has the responsibility to make sure its the right one, not one off another vehicle thats close by.

that type of towbar is meant

Fri, 2012-02-17 17:20

that type of towbar is meant to be the other way around, meaning the top should be the bottom. it is a common practice to reverse them around for more ground clearance. i know as i did it myself. however it isnt designed to go that way. spin it back the way it should be and then you will have room to hook up the boat. if it sits too low get rid of the spare and hope you dont get a flat. i dont think you would be able to get an extention for that type but if it is one of them square ones that can be removed you could get a longer one from a towbar place or they could make you one to suit your needs. hope this helps you out

Have a look at any

Have a look at any Jeep that style with the spare on the back and you will see every one that has a tow bar has an extension. Tell the dealer to find the one that fits it.

Yep, my mate has a jeep and it has an extremely long tongue - the one in the pic is the wrong one for the jeep.

As others have said you can get the right one from jeep or pretty much any towbar speacilists

Cheers

Before you do too much more

Have a good look through the car, under the seats and in the little secret hidey holes, Maybe the previous owner hid the original hitch somewhere in that motor car....

Or if the previous owners details are in the handbook, give them a call they may still have it sitting in the garage and they may even tell you any problems they may have had with the car (not that I am saying there were any, just a thought I always do it when I get a new 2nd hand car)

See if you can get a spare tyre lift bracket to give you a bit more clearance after you sort out the tow bar problem. The Pajero spare hangs low and you can't open the back door with the boat trailer on so you buy a spare tyre lift kit and gives enough clearance to open the door. I don't have the kit an my Pajero yet, but will be getting one because it is a pain to open the back door 3 inches and squeeze things in.

Every inch counts as my wife says.

thanx again

thanx again

everybody for there valuable information. i have decided just to go to rocko tobars and get a proper fitting tow hitcth ,i think this would be the most sensible thing to do, as i dont want any problems to arise and want to be 100% sure it is safe and legit. i dont want to bag out the car dealer as i got a realy good deal from them. The car did not have one on it, so iasked him is there one, and he said no but he will get one from another car and put it on mine. simple mistake i presume as i didnt pick the e3rror until i got it home and had a proper look over the vehicle.

Throwing the spare wheel in

Mon, 2012-02-20 09:31

Throwing the spare wheel in the back of the car when towing may be another option if you have the room until you get a longer one fitted
