Warren River Fishing

Got down to pemberton on the weekend for an overnight camp on the Warren River on the heartbreak trail. We left home at about 10 in the morning and arrived at the Warren at about 12:30. After quickly setting up camp we grabbed the fishing gear and went for a walk along the river. We didnt catch anything on this walk but did see a guy fishing who had caught two nice rainbows from a nice set of rapids about 300 metres upstream from our camp, the biggest was about 40cms and the smaller one probably around 30-35cms. I cast a line out with some worms at night try for a cobbler but didnt get anything.

We got out of bed at about 6:30 and stoked the fire up before heading out for another early morning fish along the river around our camp again with no fish. When we got back we decided to pack up early and move around and try some different fishing spots in the area. We continued on along the heartbreak trail road for a few k's before stopping off at another campsite to try again for a fish or two. After about 40 minutes fishing at a few nice rapids around this campsite we decided to just drop some lures of of a decking that was about five metres above the water into some nice looking snags which paid off with a chunky redfin that probably would have been about 25-30cms long. we then headed from our camp back to the crossing of the river near the king trout farm and tried around there for about half an hour and with no signs of any fish decided to move on to Pemberton for lunch. On the way in to Pemberton we crossed the lefroy brook and decided to stop there for a quick cast. I was using a small celta spinner and on my first cast under the bridge on the lefroy i saw a reasonable sized rainbow trout follow in my lure. About two minutes after seeing my fish follow in i saw a massive rainbow trout follow in dad's halco scorp right to the edge before swimming off and hiding under the weeds on the edge of the brook. In every small run in the lefroy there seemed to be at least two or three trout holding up. I seen a few other trout which probably would have been around 35cms hit my lures but failed to hook up. I finally hooked a rainbow that was probably around 30cms on a small celta spinner but lost it just after hooking it. I also seen a reasonable sized redfin sitting in one of the pools. My dad managed to catch a nice rainbow trout that was probably around 25-30cms on a halco scorpion but we released it anyway.

After about an hour on the Lefroy with dozens of fish sighted and only one landed we decided to continue on and stopped in at the pemberton bakery for lunch. We then headed out to big brook dam where we seen a whole school of massive redfin sitting in the shallow water below the overflow. We think they were spawning because they were sitting in pairs of two and all wedged in beetween rocks and weed. Some of them would have gone over 40cms. After try to interest these redfin with lures and only foul hooking one when i dragged my lure over it which it fell off just before the bank and before i could think i suddenly through my rod on the bank and jumped into the river and chased it. After about five minutes of chasing these spawning redfin by hand i had lost about 8 redfin which fell out of my hands and jumped through my legs. I spent about two minutes looking for any more redfin sitting in rocks in the water but couldnt see any so we dicided to head home. Since our car was on the other side of the river and my shoes and pants were already wet i just took a short cut and walked across the river while dad went around and over the wall. I then spotted one redfin that was still sitting just out of the pool where i had just scared all the other from. After assesing the area the redfin i was sitting in i decided to trap it by putting rocks and a big dead branch across the shallow water beetween it and the main stream. Then once i made sure the wall was big enough to trap the redfin in its pool i walked up behind the fish and scared it. My plan worked perfectly it turned around and swam downstream but hit my wall and swam along my wall. I chased it into shalloe water where i cornered it and just grabbed it and pulled it out of the water. This redfin turned out to be 37cms long and weighed 1.75kgs. So now my pb redfin it set at 37cms and i caught it by hand! :)

redfin i noticed you said alot of fish were following but not commiting. i fish the lefroy warren and trene alot and i have found that the way to over come this is downsize lure /leader. i know if your using a halco 35 scorp then your probably scratching your head thinking about the further down size, but tie on a cd1 rapala in brown trout and see if that changes your luck so far i havent had a fish refuse one yet as it is like a little snack for them . great work on the fish mate especially the pb.

all the best
