Wilbinga / Loonies / Flat Rock
Hi all. I am after some advice regarding the type of terrain in getting to the general Wilbinga area north of Two Rocks.
I am a very inexperienced 4WD'ver with a 2004 model 3 litre turbo diesel GU Patrol.
How hard is it to get to the beach from the main road (Wanneroo Road)? I have plenty of mudmaps, aerial photos etc. So I have a fair idea of where to go.
But what it she terrain like. Is it suited to a fairly inexperienced driver. I am hoping to drive around till I find a nice easy track to get down to the beach.
Basically it is a case of taking the wifes car (usually does the school run etc) and not scratching it to bits or getting it bogged up to the axle in the middle of nowhere. Happy wife....happy life !
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Beach
The beach can get verrry soft at times so it pays to keep right up near the top.
From memory there is a track that used to run parallel to the beach about 400 metres inland that wasn't too bad, maybe one of the regulars can fill you in if its still there.

Two Rocks
Head in from the northern end of the Two Rocks town site up a hill you will do in H2 then there is a spot to let down your tyres and head off from there. Take ya pick from that point, theres plenty of high spots to scope out as you drive along its a very well used track but if you hit the beach it will no doubt be tough going as there might not be much beach to drive on (havnt been up for a few months). 2 cars is always a good idea.
Check it out on Nearmaps. Enjoy the drive.

It's the Wife's Car?
OMG. Better not take her then LOL
The roads in there range from OK to fucking horrible depending where you end up without any experience up there. Plenty of people will preceed you and go in on high pressure. The result of this is a corrogated road and a shit ride. Let your tyers down before you go in. I use 18lb and that gets me in and out of most places. Another piece of advice is to stay well clear of the beaches this time of year bacause of the spring tides and the sands become very unpredicatble unless you know the area.
Another piece of advice is to ignore the advice of Herbie Sherbei LOL

Sounds like the main track will be easy (but bumpy) but could be tricky gertting to the beach

If you are doing a solo trip
If you are doing a solo trip stay off the beach as sand is just to soft in area's and there have been a few cars lost over the years there . We do club trips up there every now and then and for an inexperienced driver these can be a good idea as if you get in the s..t , someones there to help you out .Check out Western Patrol Club , pretty good club .

good advice
all good advice, stay off the beach this time of year. I was up there a couple of days ago and usually head there once a fortnight. The actual track itself is fine, just let your tyres down to take out the rough ride on corrugations. There is a maze of tracks which take plenty of trips to figure out so just be cautious and if in doubt walk ahead first. some of the tracks pop out just at the top of beaches so you can leave your car there and walk 20m to the waters edge.
Have a look on google earth and decide on a few spots you want to look at before you go and then aim for them. there is alot of weed around at the moment so you will probably need to dodge that.
Look out for motorbikes and cars there have been a few accidents this year, Herbie had a head on with a 4 wheeler, if you have a flag (and you should) use it
Have a good trip and post a report

Was there today
I was up there today, and as the guys have already said the easiest way in is to go through 2Rocks, the tracks are pretty hard, some of the smaller ones are a little overgrown, but if your going up there alone STAY OFF THE BEACH, there isn't much beach there and what is there is VERY boggy in places, but there is plenty of tracked that run through the back of the dunes thats only 20-30m back from the beach.
ALSO
FYI there was A LOT of floating weed in the water today and quite a bit on the beach in places

Thanks again. Everyone for
Thanks again. Everyone for your comments. Will probably wait a few weeks. Maybe check the tide charts and wait for a high morning tide. If u see some guy in a patrol completely bogged.... That will be me!

Listen to the advice
If you head up there and get completely bogged then you have ignored all of the good advice offered in this thread. It's not impossible to lose your vehicle to the ocean up there.
My thoughts at the moment are that we should wait for a period of steady easterly winds as the weed situation just keeps getting worse. Next week looks promissing and I have little doubt I will head up for a look later in the week. I think the weed will probably hang around for quite some time. Some of us older farts who have a good knowledge of the area know where to go to avoid the weed. What's better, we know how to get there LOL.
My tip is that the Storm Gars may well appear in big numbers. That can be a lot of fun and lots of good bait for later on.
