Wrasse as Bait

I have been catching a few to many brown spotted and western king wrasse lately.  Has anyone had much luck using these as baits. I am thinking about scaling and filleting them and going deep sea bottom bouncing. Has anyone had any luck using these baits?

i have maged to pull in a 62cm dhuey off the back of rotto and a 1.5kg skippy near centaur using wrasse, but nothing much else. I was blaming the wrasse but now I think it might be the skippers fault (i am the skipper in caser your wondering).

 thanks for the reply mako

Good bait for Dhuies. I like to halve the fillets lengthwise and place on a a set of snelled hooks.

I was just behind carnac a few weeks ago and first drop hooked onto a brown wrasse. I chucked him back and just as he hit the water a big sambo came right to the surface and scoffed him. So I guess they would make a pretty good bait!

So the red wrasse (western king) is better than the brown spotted?!?! Does the brown spotted work at all?

Red is the best, even if they are 300mm long, just whack a big hook in through its back or bottom lip and let it go.If its dead I don't even bother filleting them, couple of 10/0 ganged or snelled if you prefer and away you go

I've used a small size 2 hook that's wired to a size 7/0 hook and baited the small hook for a wrasse or similar, when they do and hook them selves, you have a nice fresh live bait down there waiting to be eaten. It's worked for me several times.

I was out fishing once and one of the other people had a small fish caught and we started joking about using it as live bait, so i suggested to leave it down there for a few minutes and see. About 30 seconds later a good size dhuie latched on :D. Cant remember if it was a wrasse or not. Standard sized snelled hooks were used, but using a double hook size is a good idea to try and do that a bit more reliably.

Dhuie chewies

They are one of the best baits ever for dhuies. Fishing the close in ground use either them or sand whiting live and you will always do well-if they are around.

You just have to let the dhuies have plenty of line to swallow the bait prior to setting the hook. Sometimes they will just 'mouth' the bait and when you wind in you can see they have scratched a few scales of the livie just behind their gills.
