Yellow Fin Whiting Popping Technique
Hi FWers
Just interested in what technique other employ popping for whiting. I have changed mine lately and having more success.
Started popping almost like blooping originally. Got a few but noticed that the fish would follow, and then on the pause would abort.
I thought this still was the correct way and persisted, and yes got a few.
But a tried basically a new way and that is constant wind with a few twitches of the rod tip, and this seems to get more hits and less aborts.
Is this what others use?
Or is there even better ones out there.
Also tried the fly and the same with the strips the fish seem to spook on the pause, but a flat out pull seem to get them more excited (pretty much like men LOL)

i find the more the lure
i find the more the lure moves the more they hit, so not so much hjow fast but keep the lure moving. With little poppers you can pretty much just wind at a steady pace and they will hit it as long as there is a bit of splashing.
Walk the dog lures are the best i reckon, again keep it moving pretty much similar to your technique, twitch and wind

Yeah Crasny1,I do the same
Yeah Crasny1,
I do the same constant wind and twitching of the rod tip. I reckon this has to do with the prawn skittering from the surface. I observed a prawn running away from blowie once at Peel estuary - it constantly flicked itself into the air, into the water, all in a straight line. So a prawn will rarely sits still on the surface like when we pause our popper, especially with a predator hot on pursue.
Whereas when popping for tailor in the dark, a bloop followed by a pause gives time for the tailor to locate the popper to nail it. In fact, it got nailed while staying stationery.
So I ever do walk the dog I do the same, from the moment it splashes down it will commence zig zagging till a few feet from my me.

Yeah 'panicked prawn' is the
Yeah 'panicked prawn' is the retrieve I use with no pauses which also stops the blowies having a swipe. If they aren't hitting the surface I'll use a shallow diver like an SX40 and use a decent pace roll with twitches which is very effective.
I love the Sugarpens as you can mix up between walking and popping and they cast a mile.

Constant retrieve with non
Constant retrieve with non stop twitches. If you pause the popper, even for a moment, any whiting that are following it will lose interest almost immediately.
I find a constant retrieve better for tailor usually but pauses has it's days

+1 constant retrieve
I don't pause for any of my lure retrieves while targeting whiting, I keep the lure moving. Like others have previously mentioned it seems they shy away on the pause. I also don't strike to hard, usually a few quicker winds and a lift of the rod tip. Changing my standard trebles to assist or fine gauge trebles has helped me a lot with staying connected to the fish. Haven't been out this season but will soon. Sugarpen and crystal pops are my go to lures.

Sugarpen stock hooks are horrendous for such an expensive lure
