5kg Red Bass

5kg Red Bass

Had a short session with the poppers yesterday. End score One all. Lost a similar sized fish that made it home, then came out and swam around the boat for about five minutes with the lure hanging out it's gob. Cheeky buggers!

Yeah they pull alright, but real dirty fighters. This one was on a Stella 8000 with 60 pound Sensor Braid with a short 80 pound leader.

Shit i would have thought that was an over kill by a long way! i was thinking 30 pound with 80lb leader! They must pull! I supose your getting them around structure though which would explain alot. Whats with the short leader?

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

I just keep the leader short

I just keep the leader short so I don't have a knot banging through the guides. I use 60 with the drag wound up tight 'cause you really have to get stuck in as soon as they hit. Usually fishing in under 10 feet of water over reef so if the fish can swim down 10 feet it gets away. Very challenging, especially if they hit the lure a long way from the boat. The heavier line is also handy 'cause big GT's often hang around the same areas.

cheers,
