that fish was caught

Fri, 2007-06-22 06:01

that fish was caught on shikari charters ( Alan Bevan)and yes it was caught in 90m at the back of rotto and recaptured at the back of Rotto,
Not saying they all live and there has been fish in worse condition that have been recaptured, We must give them the best chance to survive. I have asked for more up to date info on some fish and will post it up when I get it
this is good footage of a fish in the states, look for the cage then click on that and it will download the footage

watch closely the video showing a fish with serious barotrauma recovering
as soon as it is recompressed.

Venting

Fri, 2007-06-22 09:07

What are your thoughts on Venting Wally, as a last resort measure when all else has failed and the fishes chance of survival? I read a few pieces from the East that thought it was the most successful method, a while back I'll admit.

Slow retrieve

Fri, 2007-06-22 11:46

Watch the Mindarie Mayhem 16 vid (not up yet) but it has a glass calm day where I could see the fish well down and identified it for a smallish dhuie. I slowed the retrieve down considerably with say 15m to go and you can see the fish self vent. I have used this technique several times with good results. Whilst the fish in the vid was a keeper, if it was undersize I would have sent it back down with a release weight but in far better condition than if I had reefed it up at top speed.

For venting to be successful you really need to have steralised needles onboard and I doubt too many would go to that extreme. Poking a rusty spike in a fish's belly isn't the best, though I admit I have done this in the past on wrasse and rockcod without blinking an eye. Tsk tsk....

Andy i do indeed carry

Fri, 2007-06-22 14:55

Andy i do indeed carry sealed steralized needles in my tackle bag for just a case if it was to happen and yeah the same with the dhuie...i was bringing up a small one that you could clearly see was a dhue and i slowed the retrieve only to see a shti load of bubbles errupt from the fish! I put it down to what you are saying. Oh yeah the needle thing was what we used to do with the black jews up in broome, it helped.

Keep it tight, reeeeeeel tight!

Adam venting works, the tagging studies show it does, but as you can see the release weight works better, note: the results from these posted are from all depths, simple works ok in 10m to 20m,

Dhufish recapture rates (to early 2006).this is no where near what has been tagged but the results are the same

Simple 366 23 6.3%
Vented 199 5 2.5%
Shotline 318 32 10.1%

tomato source got this from the recfishwest website.

spewing i deleted all my info/ pics in a fit of rage, there is heaps more, I have asked John to post more up on wangler, then you can copy and paste it to here Adam for those that don't view all forums.all this info should be on the ANSAWA website that was built exactly for this purpose, no one has done it but we are working on it.

Its nearly the weekend and looks like no one will be out boat fishing in this wind so I may as well put the last of the current MM series up for all to see.
