Wait for it , wait for it .........GO!

New moon on 26th or something I think , and according to the future forcast for surface water temp in bom , it be a degree warmer in metro

 by about then .

There walking in Jurien and Lano atm , according to the highly accurate and totally infallable social media.

So give it one week ,3 days , 2 hours and 4 minutes and I would  gently lower my baited pot into 15.43 m of water onto sand ajoining reef into the mouths

of the walking crayfish hoards!.......................... but its only a guess .

 Shell hardning info below.

Crayfish release an enzyme that softens ups the shell, as they have a exoskeleton they can only grow bigger by hoping out of the old shell and hardening up the new one underneath. They dont sit out in the open/ sunlight to harden up the shell.....that would mean death from predation. The reason they come into shallow water to shell is because it is safer for them  from large predators. The enzyme causes the meat to be flowery and it is not as sweet or firm, they pull the moajority of the calcium in their shell and hold it in two small capsules, untill post molt, when they release the calcium back into the shell causing it to harden up.

Shallow water

Fri, 2019-11-15 08:48

The only part of that shell hardening I don't agree with is when they say the crays come back into shallow water. Like a whites in reverse?? Can you imagine this mass reds migration when all the reds come back to shallow water ..getting eaten along the way...to shed their shells...only to do a u-turn and head out again. The crays are always there. The sea bottom in places is a mass of honeycombe. Holds so many crays we never see. I read somewhere crays only do a white moult once in their life. I know some moult in March and they are reds. Not sure what the white moult is all about, but must involve some sort of migration to deeper water.

The whites start in shallow and as the season progresses and water warms the moult accurs out further. They are not the same crays that start in shallow. I think they all move out a bit further until eventually some get to the shelf and take a right turn and head north...to where I do not know. Probably Abrolhos or big bank.

Yeah im not saying your wrong , but  there has been tagging programs done that do indicate more of a walk or migration than your indicating, in some crays.

No its not like all the  ducks flying south for winter type thing but the tagging did say some start in very shallow , to only find themselves in very deep water

a couple of months later. However as you say in some tag groups up to 70% failed to move any great distance.

But if your putting a pot on 18m of sand between the shore and 5 fathom any other time of the year your feeding fish.

Suddenly for a few brief weeks those same pots could clean up on walking crays , so even if its not a 200km walk for most crayfish , theres enough movement

to target them.    Some tag info below.

I have been keeping a log of my catches and depths diving for about 6 years. This year has so far been the worst by a long way. I think your dead right.
