Yep Ray's Bream
for me too. Not uncommon to find them in the stomach contents of marlin and swordys.

Southern Ray's Bream
Very interesting Adam! Was this from west or east of the cape?
It is actually a Southern Ray's Bream Brama australis. It differs from Ray's Bream Brama brama by the slope of the forehead. Ray's has a very steep forehead, almost blunt, whereas Southern Ray's has a more pointed head like in the photo.
For interest, there are another 3 species of Brama confirmed from WA and another one that is probably here. Those four species differ from Ray's and Southern Ray's by no having the elongated filaments at the start of the anal fin - so keep an eye out!
Adam, I don't suppose you kept it for me? :-) I'd be keen to get some for the collection - in fact I'd be keen on all species of Brama.
Alan, I'm interested about the marlin and swordys - can you elaborate on where? These are typically regarded as temperate fishes, but we have a few records from the Rowleys and off Port Hedland.

Glenn I was more referring to NZ waters. I can't comment on Oz waters but if these species share the same waters it would appear likely to me that marlin and swordys would feed upon Ray's Bream as they appear to do over the ditch.

Rays Bream
caught plenty of them while tuna/sword longlining around WA but I dont recall noticing them in the swordfish stomach contents?
