Hooks?

Wed, 2009-03-11 18:49

LOL, wont catch any without hooks Brad.

Seriously though, do you notice much difference in the GT's interest regarding a $20 Dumbbell and a $100 Fisherman?

The "more expensive " ones

Wed, 2009-03-11 18:54

The "more expensive " ones seem to take a fair bit more Shit BJ. The last a lot longer thats for sure. I actually like the cuberas the best so far which is a mid range popper, very easy to work and proven successfull.

If you figure it out, 2 dubbells = 1 cubera but a cubera last a hell of a lot longer that 2 dumbells. I still have a few of the dumbells for the really harsh ground where i refuse to throw an expensive popper

nah, i might hook one and loose a lure

just a lot better for storage, takes 2 seconds to put some hooks on

then you dont need four hundred sets of owner trebbles and splits

Around what weight are they? That red Cubera(top left) has certainly taken a beating, how many fish has that accounted for? Also, do you get those Cuberas at your local?

John,
There is a big difference between the action, swim and splash of a Fisherman Big Mouth and Dumbell.

There is even a significant difference between a $100 Fisherman Big Mouth and $100 Fisherman S-pop. While sometimes a GT will hit anything that moves, there is alot more that meets the eye than just a splash and loud noise.

In fact, there are alot of GT poppers out there which are highly effective yet completely silent.

I will have a beachcaster

Thu, 2009-03-12 19:15

I will have a beachcaster and penn 535 for shore fishing, a light spinning rod which will cast 80g with a penn d5 baitcaster reel, and a 30lb class wavebalster boat rod with a penn 500l loaded with 50lb braid.  If I need something stronger I can organise that to but the wavebklaster will take some grief and the 550l is strong.  Cheers brad.

Depnding on where you are fishing i would upgrade from 50lb. If there are big GT's and reef then expect to loose fish and gear. However if it is sand and open water you should be ok. All of the poppers in my picture are a min of 120g up to 170g so a bit big for what your after.

Perhaps check out the tuna 80's, either black jack, heru or nomad do them. Very similar to the cubera 125's in my picture just smaller (the red one with the teeth marks in it) alternativly you could just crab some halco rooster poppers they are cheap enough that you dont care and they work. Probably just need to upgrade the splits and trebbles to owners.

good luck!

I can put 50lb on the reel

Fri, 2009-03-13 16:43

I can put 65lb on the reel no worries as that combo is used for winching conger from wrecks, they dont have the speed of a GT but 60lb of conger is usually well pissed when you drive a 8/0 through its head!!  The rod stops them, my waveblaster will cope with 150g of casting weight easy but I will take your suggestion and get a mixed bag of lures to cater for different conditions and weights.  Are they any spots to catch GT from the shore fella?

Thanks for the help really appreciate it

Purists at it again LOL

Thu, 2009-03-12 19:37

This reminds me of some old fly fishing sites LOL. You guys put so much thought into it. The tackle industry should pay you (and probably do). Like the pic from Roger Knife a day or so ago when he posted a pic of a pissy little Roach caught on clean maggots and a feather float. Most of us will say "so what?" but it does take thought and pesntation to get there.

Nice set Brad Wink

How do you put a collection together. The way Pup and I are going we will be down to the bottom of the tackle box soon.

Maybe I should remove the hooks off Pups to save some.

would work, depending on how

Fri, 2009-03-13 19:03

would work, depending on how it is constructed it might not work for very long. you want to find something that is wired all of the way through with 1.8-2mm wire . updrade to owner hooks and splits

Big GT's are brutal mate, they desroy gear.

If you want something that is reasonably priced that you just want for a trip get something like the river to sea dumbells, only about $20, but you will still have to upgrade the hooks and splits for GT's

here have a look
http://www.motackle.com.au/index.cfm?pr=product&product_id=4565

depending on where you go etc grab the 200mm 110g ones
