from what i heard the boat

Thu, 2008-07-24 20:36

from what i heard the boat wasnt tied down onto the trailer, the winch cable came loose, then the boat moved back on the trailer, and then forward quite hard snapping the winch post, from there with the momentum of the car going forward the boat rolled off,so to me simple logic was to secure the boat,if this was done there wouldn't have been this problem, cant see it being a coraline issue and not really the trailer company issue, more an owner issue.

G'day all, my mate recently brought me back a mackie head from Exmouth,[ not the rest of it unfortunately,  ] anyway i would like to clean it to keep the skull. Does anybody have an idea on how to do this without it stinking my backyard out or softening the bones.   Cheers ......P.S.    Hope your back on your foot again soon Spess

Tie down for sure

Thu, 2008-07-24 23:06

but the weld should't break away like that doesn't look like enough penatration i would still question the weld.

I had the bottom plate tear on one of my trailers but the weld didnt break.JMO

diji and all other doubting

Fri, 2008-07-25 07:11

diji and all other doubting the weld you can see that it is the steel from the post that has stressed and cracked not the weld at all. also the tie down eye is still there wich in hand proves it was not tied down. another thing is it wasnt the owner of the boat who stuffed up he had it getting towed by someone to headland for his family holiday .there is no doubting a papas trailer as they are one of the best put together trailers available on the market.

Brenz its not the weld on

Fri, 2008-07-25 09:31

Brenz its not the weld on the base that has given way its the weld on the up-right that looks stuffed. If the up-right weld did give way then all the weight of the boat would have been on the base, causing it to shear off. IMO not a very strong trailer looking at.

still should have tied it

still should have tied it down in the first place
we allways have our boat tied down and we have had no dramas yet (touch wood).

One of the cheaper trailers on the market

Sat, 2008-07-26 03:48

And what if the tie down point is there doesn't mean the strap couldn't of snapped
I said tie down for sure not it was tied down
And a tie down bracket should be seperate from the post
the tie down link has helped shear the post off when its been pushed forward
another thing whoever prepared the the boat for towing is the one who should of secured the boat
Brenz read the owners post welding giving way

Anyway something for every body to learn from feel sorry for the owner

trailer

Fri, 2015-01-09 13:33

I could have said nothing, but what the hell.
Andy ref "its a trailit" trailer....
the missing word from "Dreamweaver" is Pappa....so clarified that one.
now onto trailit.... Waynes business. and as its a fishing site there will be no exaggeration ....
Best trailer I've ever had .. only had (4) boat trailers.
Current one is trailit, and Wayne didn't rail roadmaster me there you go spelled it out. everything on the "rail road" trailer touted as an optional "EXTRA" for $7000 including the damn second hand spare wheel was INCLUDED in the $3000 yep no mistake $3000 cheaper trailer from Trailit. with a brand new tyre galvanized rims, include the walkway, free break back, tandem axle, flew in one night at midnight and he repacked the bearings by candle light in a storm on the side of the road... Ok that's a lie but did do it two days before Xmas one year through me lack of planning... Never had better service.

Ok this is 7 years old... but.

My Trade was a Boilermaker welder / Pipe Fitter.

From the photo I see that the weld did not give way, the RHS did, look at the thickness, if you are going to use a post without a knee brace, then it must be out of 5-6mm wall thickness.

Fatigue from the boat moving back and forth would have weakened the braceless post to the point were it gave way.

Strapping down the boat would have reduced the fatigue factor, but it would have gone one day.

Agree with that Wal, looks like 2mm wall thickness and probably the brittle effect from galvanising combined.
