PB Dhuie (on jig of course)

PB Dhuie (on jig of course)

I've managed to catch a fair few dhuies on jigs (octas and knife) but still hadnt beaten my PB which was on bait a while ago. Finally managed to beat my dhuie PB, and on jig too which was awesome fun on the light rod. Went 80cm and 9.5kg, so unfortunately not quite the double digits, but i'll work on beating that up at the Abrolhos Laughing

nice fish mate.

What type of action do you use when jigging for Dhus's?

similar to sambo jigging?

I think it was 40 or 45

Mon, 2010-03-15 09:54

I think it was 40 or 45 perhaps? We were deciding whether to launch from Mindarie or Hillarys, and picked the later and it paid off. Was a new spot for the skipper and we managed to land another dhuie a bit bigger and a baldy on lumps in the area, plus the tuna, so ended up being a good decision.

Jigging action: Fair bit different from sambos (and diff jigs for the most part). Usually sambo jigging I wind flat out and pump the rod (getting into a good rythym), but for demersals I like jerking the rod, giving the jig a bit of slack to flutter then winding in a bit of slack and repeating. Sometimes short sharp jerks to give action to the jig. If you chuck the jigs in the water an jig them a few m under the boat, you get an idea of how they work and the best action for them.

Barneyboy got bricked by two dhuie's on SP close in on the Cape.

standout yesterday was the shout lighten or shabba...(everything but dhuie's though)

yep nice work Matt, been a while waiting for that one. I tried jigging yesterday too but only landed Sergeant Baker and a sand whiting! No dhuies for the boat either so I wasn't too distressed.

If you're getting sargeant

Mon, 2010-03-15 15:45

If you're getting sargeant baker, then thats usually a good sign. They seem to like similar jigs, actions and grounds as dhuies. Plus they make great fillet strip baits if you do want to bait fish (or someone else on boat is).

Was the whiting on a jig?? Not one species I've got on jigs. Would love a KG on jig, and have some idea which jigs they might take though....

Otherwise, for sandies, I do have some tiny tiny jigs, but not easy getting them down except in shallow and light conditions.

the sand whiting was on a 120g (i think) Zest baitfish. It was hooked on top of the head between the eyes and mouth so I'm claiming it! There appeared to be plenty down there at the time.
And we did strip bait the sgt barkers but no luck.
