Robber Crab

Robber Crab

How is that for a crab! This was photographed at Christmas Island, apparently its over 100 years old and the bin is a 40 litre bin. I'm told these kinds of crabs climb up the coconut trees and chop the coconuts in half. I wouldnt want to run into one!

Coconut crabs

Wed, 2011-06-29 10:03

Coconut crabs are superb eating. If I remember correctly, they are protected in most areas of Xmas island, but can be taken if they 'wander out'. I seem to recall in Vanuatu, they have them tied up outside restaurants, and you choose which 'one' you wish to eat! yum

When I was a young fellow in the Navy, the older sailors told me not to fall asleep on the beach as the coconut crabs will find me and mistake my head for a cocunut. I thought they were taking the piss when they told me the size. I didn't crash on the beach after seeing them wandering around.

So true. The Coconut crab(s) I had in vanuatu yrs back on the plate was to say the least superb.

We went to the Waterfront Restuarant one day and was "playing" with the "pet" crab we thought tied to a rope in the entrance. I ordered CCNCrab for the meal, and when we walked out there was no crab on the robe. Felt a little devistated that I just ate my Buddy.

They use to be common in French Polynaesia aswell but now it is rare to find them.

Dont know about the other islands though.
