Serious Malabar Cod?

I've been stalking this awesome site for some time now after my best mate put me onto it.
Love the content and photos so thought I better join proper and make a post.
This little bloke was boated in my Quintrex 20nm off Coral Bay in 80m of water.
Once in a lifetime fish.....maybe.

Sad story on release I'm afraid, after air release and a long time towing around it was evident life had left the beast. 80m of water had taken its toll. Even though as you would imagine on 50LB gear, the pump to the surface was a super slow one.

Because it is >1m you have to let it float away. Despite some efforts I recall 2 floaters I HAD to leave behind. Must have spent 30minutes swimming one in an attempt to revive. The other was dead on the surface.
And then you have to "release" them. After a while up there you knew what it was on the end off the line. If the water was deeper than 20m I cut the line rather than risk a beautiful fish floating away to be sharked latter.
Dont know how you would overcome the problem though.

Now I'm curious. That size they are protected over a metre ? Please correct me if I'm wrong . So what did you do with it? Or what are you meant to do if you inadvertantly catch a big fella like this and it dies? There's enough there to feed an army.

Quite correct all, over 1m they must be released, and even my anchor was no help to pull it below so as you said, yes.............let it float away and try not to cry.

its not easy to release these big boys
we caught one several years ago while trolling at Exmouth on a rapala deep diver, we tried for ages to revive it to release but it was to no avail, it was huge, even the ones that go back on a huge release weight,do they survive?
