I've done some research on the sharksheild and big nastys etc, the outcome of the tests are very good. I've also got the DVD showing the sheild in use on a 5m plus greatwhite....thumbs up for the shield!

Make sure you dive over if you come across a Whale Shark Ryan, bloody awesome.
With regards to the shark shield and a 5m white, you'll never know if it doesn't work anyway. Your dive buddy might but.

hehehe, theres been two different ppl that have been taken whilst having a shark sheild attached from what i've heard about. One person had it switched off....^$@#@&$&%
and the other had the lead coiled up so it didn't have coverage
Yeh we'll be jumping in for sure John, cant wait mate, fished the place for 10 years and now time to see some of the under water stuff, oohhh and fishing too

Shark Shield have spent a lot of money in the last 2 years developing the unit and covering up an attack would bury them for sure so they wouldn't do that. I can PM contact details for Shark Sheild, they stand by the unit and if people say it doesn't work he's happy to set them straight and give them the correct info!

Tapouts cousin at abrohlos when we were there said that he sees many big tigers and bronzies around the islands all the time. I noticed that he had a shark shield in the boat with us when we were out and i said why arnt you using it? He said there a waist of time as most of the sharks he has encounted while free diving have come really close and dont really give a shit about it so he stoped wearing it! Hes one of the best free divers i have seen and travels the globe diving. He talks about many encounters were sharks have become alittle too friendly and too the stage were he thought he mighjt have to spear it or get eaten! All the time wearing the shield. Same same about im sure it works and is proberbly a good investment.......if had one id were it but never with out a 600lb gun in one hand pointing straight at it. hehehehe

Not to create further arguement but..
I have a cousin who owns a dive shop and he is one of the licensed service agents for the shark sheild. I decided to buy one after talking with him regarding his personal experiences testing the unit in "real" situations in the ocean. After testing against several large toothy critters he didn't have any problems with the effectiveness of the unit but what he did mention was that the units stated effective range of 3 meters detterant was slightly incorrect when he tested the unit he fund that it was more like the working range was around the 1.5m to 1.8m range.
Maybe the Mako was just outside this effective working range which could account for the reason why your mate had to fend him off.But regardless I will definatley still use one as part of my diving standard gear, in the end you really have to have your head screwed on correctly when you dive, too many things can and will go wrong!Not trying to cause further arguement but just trying to give a bit more info.

Not questioning the info Matt ie if it's legit and agree fact's are facts. I'm just stating that many ppl have their thoughts and encounters and some do question the Shark Shield, this guy from Shark Sheild said he would talk to them and set them straight with correct info about the product.....thats all!

I had an experience during a deco stop 6kms from the 5fb with a nice size hammer head
try to get a taste of me and had to punch it away! even with my sheild on which I tested
while still in the water and got a great boot!!
I like having a security blanket out wide and it worked wonders on Exxy bronzies but I
wouldn't like to find it not working at the wrong time ha ha!!(didn't affected Wobbies?)
If you could please Ryan send me the PM as I would like to know what speicies they have
tested it on to give me piece of mind?
Great to use as Bronzie deterant while Maccie fishing saves alot at the side of the boat!!

Sceptical!
I'm a very sceptical person and also dont just beleive if someone says it works...it definately works!
On the flip side I put a lot of faith into products and test most, the shark shield is one that I'm not gonna go face to face with a 5m nasty just to test it. Soooooooo i've been doing research on this product not because I dont trust it but wanting to know the correct info/be put straight and I like hearing any negatives or positives as this will help me as a rec diver understand the Shark Shield a lot more.
P.S, I dont sell this product but plan to use it from now on despite having no issues locally. Going north has triggered me to get one and Pete D also used it over the side of the boat after getting their fish sharked all the time at the Monte's and the sharks disapeared and they started landing fish.

Theres no arguments here mate! Just a few guys making comments on a product that has alittle contriversy that goes with it. I have heard of guys using it over the side of the boat like you say Ryan with great success.....gotta do something then i suppose, wouldnt mind reading up alittle on the shield to see recomendations and the like. I hate commenting on a product that i know nothing about and im the first to say that, im only talking rumours of what peoplke have told me.....Its just my opinion which isnt much because as i said never used one or seen them in action.

If someone can loan us an underwater video camera for this up coming Exy trip, then I'm prepared to test the unit with Ryan. I can burley up and film away with Ryan playing the model diver...yes, I know, not the prettiest model but I'm sure he can complete the task.

I look forward to seeing the copious amounts of reef fish in Exmouth Pete, not long to go and i have all the confidence in the Shark Shield!
I've contacted Paul from Seachange Technology (Shark Shield) who has a massive amount of knowledge in this area. The info i've posted is from what i've read and heard so very hear/say but Paul's going to post up (when he can) and explain what Shark Shield is all about and perhaps answer some of the common questions also like;
* Has there been a shark attack whilst someone has been wearing a Shark Shield?
* Does the Shark Shield attract the sharks?
* Will big nasty sharks be detered by the Shark Shield?
* What is the range of the field?
* My friend had the Shark Shield on and the shark didn't care?
* If a shark's hell bent on attacking you, would the Shield really stop it?

Need a couple at Steep Point as well, I have lost count of how many fish I have had stolen by a "bloody rotten scum bag shark" .

Shark Shields
Have no idea myself on the effectivness of these units on noahs,
I have done heaps of diving for work all along the Esperance coast from Figure of Eight Island down to Middle Island off Cape Arid. All throughout the dives we had the units on but no-one saw any sharks so there were no real tests done.
One thing is for sure they are great for waking mates up when underwater and there is no doubt if they are on or not especially when a lead drapes over your head or leg - the boot you get is pretty impressive.
Exmouth is a good spot to test them even though I have never given them a go up there but mainly because we try to get close to the sharks to get good footage of them, but in saying that the closer you try to get to them the further they will swim away. Have often thought about getting one myself but still think they are overpriced IMO and a shark in full flight hell bent on getting you would be hard to stop.
As much as anything at least they are good for piece of mind and allow people to forget about the sharks and enjoy what they are there for which is the dive.

I threw a freedom 4 over the side, up off Barrow Island in twenty metres which immediatley stopped fish being sharked - saved moving from a great spot.

wasnt there another thread like this, someone posted a link i remember reading, as a diver i was concerned a little..
the link was saying how a pro diver was taken whilst surfin i think, the shield manufacturers went to court ,and i think new labels were placed on the product, saying this may not work whilst moving.....

I was talking to a few spero's in Exmouth just recently and they've seen their Shark Shield in use. A few bigger sharks stayed at a distance which is the shield but when a fish was speared they would try to come in closer then get zapped and outa there!
