Ugly Stik's jig rods

hey guys,

just after a bit of feedback on the ugly stik bluewater range of jig rods. Good, bad or ugly? I had a play with the 24kg overhead and i thought they were very nice for the money, didn't get to load it up though. thinking of getting one and putting a little saltist on it.

cheers

Blake

Uglys vs T Curves?

Sat, 2008-02-02 20:43

How would you rate them against T-Curves? (200/400)

Oranges and Apples (very different and hard to compare) or?

I have never used a T Curve

Sat, 2008-02-02 20:50

I have never used a T Curve so I can't comment on them
But If that was all I could spend I would buy another Ugly Stik in a heartbeat.
Saying that my new Jig rod is a Jigmaster and that is quite a bit better on the Sambo's.

So...?

Sat, 2008-02-02 20:53

So you reckon the Jigmaster is better than the US Lyndsay? For sambos.

Why so?

Yep

Sat, 2008-02-02 21:01

With out a doubt, it just feels better can't really explain it but it just does.

I do have a Torsa 30 on the Jigmaster so that could be part of the difference.

ugly stick

Sat, 2008-02-02 23:00

In my opinion an ugly stick is by far the best value for money because they are built to bend in all kinds of situations. Were a t curve needs a lot more looking after!

Thanks Guys...and?

Yeah read a few reports of T-Curves breaking at the base. Mind you, also read reports of others breaking (can't remember which ones now) that had a higher PE rating.

Appreciating that there will always be one or two duds in a batch, can't push away the thought that perhaps too high a drag setting could be the culprit.

I haven't had the opportunity to use either an US or Jigrex, so can't compare.

That said, my 200 has been tested on fish (Morwong) up to 10Kg and those fish are no slouches. Might be different if it was a decent sized Sambo.

Whats the (actual) weight like between the them - I like the 200 because it a robust little buger, but sooo light.

Also, which Ugly stig, there seems to be so many of them?

Skinny - that's a really good and interesting comment. Can you elaborate please? Are you talking curviture under load? Or?

Cheers!

Colin

PS - Lyndsay those Torsa 30s are nice lookin reels - need a lotto win first though.

I have

Sun, 2008-02-03 17:49

I have a 37kg/PE8 overhead bluewater jig rod that I use with my Accurate 2 speed. I bought it at first as it was a good price and has a good parabolic curve until I could afford a expensive rod. But to be honoust if I dont pick up another rod to get a better comparison I will stick with it permanently as it is a excellent rod. I even considered buying a spin version as well I have been that happy!

Hey guys, The rod sounds

Sun, 2008-02-03 19:10

Hey guys,

The rod sounds pretty good from all reports. I will probably get one. Hey Ryan/Honsu, does your shop sell them, if you do can you pm me the price, cheers.

Does parabolic have something to do with the bend of the rod when fuly loaded??

Thanks heaps guys.

jimbo1's picture

yeah its when

Sun, 2008-02-03 19:19

Yeah its when the rod more or less bends all the way through all the way down from the tip through towards the butt section off the rod as well. I am sure there are better rods i.e Van Staal,  jig wrex etc that do this however under pressure for a cheapish priced rod it has excellent curve in my opinion.

Sun, 2008-02-03 20:19

I've got two a 24kg and 37kg. For the price they are great, i use the 24kg on a torsa 30, its great for bottom bouncing, but its a bit uncomfortable to use for jigging tho, the but section is a bit to short, the Pe8 or 37kg range has a big longer but handle and a trigger...not sure how important that is to you...but like the others have mentioned they are unbreakable

but i think the new range of uglysticks are cheaper due to cheaper or less guides i forget...

Black tiger

Wed, 2008-02-06 14:14

I use a ( UGLY STICK )Black Tiger with a Saltist 40 running 50lb braid , fantastic to use , only problems so far is the plastic  gimbal cap broke so I put a new gold Ally one on and the foregrip is a bit short other than that they can cast ok and pull stumps out of the ground if you had to.

The Ugly Stik Black Tigers are a discontinued range but were good!

The US B/Water series are good rods and very strong. We stock the range here Blake and many more models so pop in/call or PM me if you want more details!

Cheers

US Bluewater jig rod

Fri, 2008-02-08 14:29

Shikari has a couple on board and use them for jigging Sambo's , they work well with the torsa's on them and PE8 braid, and can be used either spin or overhead , I recon they would be good popper fishing from a boat as well with a decent spinner atatched.

What do you mean they can be used either spin or overhead, could i shuck a spinner on a overhead rod and still fish to the best of its ability? Wouldn't the trigger grip get in the way?

I think he's talking about

Thu, 2008-03-06 22:01

I think he's talking about the Ugly Stik Black Tigers which had a straight tube reel seat therefore it can be used either way. The ones with the triggers are the Bluewater graphite series. Completely different rods.
