Driftbaiting!

Recently i moved house and Shaun (Shabba) was kind enough to move me and a contra was made to get him out one day on the water. We'll we've both been busy but yesterday was half a chance so we took off.

We'll with an early seabreeze forecatsed, waisting some time with one of our crayboats i finally headed to one of my pinky spots. This spot has produces some good fish to 8kg and that last big fish i released. This time i decided to keep a good fish for a feed if it came up and we'll this fish on my driftbaiting gear was no exeption. Didn't get a proper weight but this 20lb plus big honky head pinky put up a great fight in 40m.........a buzz!

Shaun had a ball getting plenty of solid/big KG's , dhufish, baldie and a mix of other species and did very well indeed. A big respect from me as he released many quality fish and farmed some of my spots....thanks mate ;)

We fished 18-40m for the day and didn't have much fishing time but had a good day none the less!

I was happy for Shaun and a good pinky to bring a smile for me.....Laughing

Driftbaiting - Please explain...

Thu, 2008-03-13 06:11

Driftbaiting while drifting... is this sending an unweighted bait down? ... as opposed to bottom bouncing?

cheers

    Round or bean sliding

Thu, 2008-03-13 06:30

Round or bean sliding sinker on the leader before your hook. Bait up and keep stripping line off your reel till you get a bite or when and if you ever hit bottom.  The weight of the sinker depends on the current. I tend to use a 4 or 5 most times.

driftbaiting!

Thu, 2008-03-13 09:05

Thanks fella's, a good pinky fore sure and the driftbaiting is effective & fun. I use a #5 bean sinker and drift  it down and sometimes i'll get hit on the way down. If thats the case i engage my baitcaster reel and if i dont get a touch i'll hit the bottom and then engage my reel but wait as the bait drifts......no touches then i'll freespol again!

Simo, i try to pick better days ie under 15knots and the driftbait ideal weather is 5-13knots. I use/sell a massive Jumbo sea anchor that's made locally and really slows my drift down. Ideal drift speed for me is 0.2 - 0.5 of a knot.

Sea Anchor

Thu, 2008-03-13 09:09

Hey Ryan

Top fish mate. Iv'e read your articles on drift baiting and pretty keen to give it a try. My sea anchor is a bit to small for my boat (21ft). What are the jumbo anchors worth??

Ryan Thipthorp's picture

Jumbo!

Thu, 2008-03-13 09:44

Yeh i had the same problem, i went through two different types of sea anchors and the most expensive one ($229) was the worst. These new ones are great and they're $109 and they come in a bag and have the retreive rope & dump cord.....all ready to go!

Great Pinky Mate. Top fish. No doubt Shaun learned a few tricks of the trade from the drift-baiting master. You are always a generous skipper, I'm sure he appreciated the day out.

Now thats one nice snapper there Ryan ,well done you are no doubt the king of the pinkies .We've had some nice pinks in that 40 m where we had a chat that day, theres some great coral in that area and seems to hold some good fish at times .At the moment Sunday looks good so fingers crossed I think I might give the inside ground a go as its had a few months rest. Might even try a night fish sat- sun if the swell drops a bit. Have never fish that area at night the snapper could realy go on the bite..

What is the best bait to use driftbaiting??
Can you use ocy and fish baits or is it best suited for squid this method??
Do you use mono or braid and what pound.

the best results for me have been getting the californion squid take out its head and push an iqf in the tube then rig as normal the combo of the 2 baits seems to be dynamite for the big snapper and dhuies.

I dream of catching a snapper like that.
