Northern Pilbara Waters

Well a mate from wickham and i decided at the last minute to go for a late season fish in one of the creeks a lot further north that we have ever fished before in the Pilbara. It was also an excuse to get the new boat into some creeks and see how she handles. She certainly did impress me.  Getting there was a mission with me setting of from karratha at 0300 for us both to arrive at the mouth of the creek by about 1000.  We had a bit of a squall come through on us in the open water passage on the way up which restricted us to about 13 or 14 knots - unless we wanted a bleeding pancreas for the rest of the trip!  The squall passed and at the mouth the water looked awesome.  With a 2.67 m low we were able to navigate through the maze of sand bars across the huge systems mouth.

On the way In on the new rig!

On the way in the mouth

Just before we made it to the main channel in the main body of the creek we stopped off to grab a half dozen decent size livies from the massive school pushing into the creek on the flood.  One cast just about filled the bucket. sweet!

Grabbed a half dozen livies on the way in

With so many livies on offer we could afford to be picky, although this Trip was more of a recon type to find some new preferably trolling and casting ground.  With some shallow divers out the back while we explored the reaches searching for some structure. Paul was the first to hook up.  Nice little bluenose salmon were about in numbers, this one was released

First fish in a new creek, never fished here before

We found a good stretch of rock bars that were producing many little GT's , cod and the odd Jack.  On the run back passed a big drop off i hooked up to the first "lost" barra of the trip, all on the third trolling run.  As described i managed to get my self racked and i lost the beautiful little classic +10 in the picture bellow.

trolled up a heap of small GT's, cod, off this rockbar

We persisted for a while longer catching quite a few more GT's and the odd jack.  We had a pretty early day and with the tide beginning to EBB once again we decided to have a rest on the bank and sink a few cans.

small jack caught on the troll

Little Jack, released.  Taken on a reidies taipan, this lure produced quite a few fish and lost me another barra.

I had a little session later that night in a good hole with a few snags that we had found.  I got buried in the snags by one barra around 75cm, on top of that broke my live fibre bait cast rod on a meter plus black jew that i had boat side.  I was about to net the fish when i turned on my head lamp, stupid me spooked the fish and with one massive pump the fish paddled straight under the boat in a split second then whack!  By by live fibre and goodnight little live bait session.

camp set up on an exposed sand barthe baitboardearly morning troll session

We woke the next morning early and spent a lot more time exploring the reaches of the system.  After all the purpose of this trip was to find some new ground.  We did managed to find two really good spots.  One great trolling run produced yet another "lost barra" for me.  This time on a reidies taipan.  I hooked up right next to a shallow rock bar, the fish jumped and managed to dislodge the hooks, bloody barbless!!

My first barra in the new boat 78cm releasedme looking like a roo caught in a spotlight

Spent the rest of the day once again exploring, flicking soft plastics and drinking beer.  I collected a few good lives to try out in another very deep hole we found late in the afternoon.  Low tide was at about 11pm so we had some dinner and a few too many cans of rum before i set out my first line.  I only had about half a dozen livies so it was going to be a short session.  First cast i hooked up almost straight away to another lost barra (I think number 5 for the trip).  Second cast, finally i landed the new boats first barra.   Not huge but 78 and very healthy, was released.

After that fish i managed to loose one more barra before calling it quits and going to bed.

78cm released my first barra in the new rig

Overall i am pretty stocked with the late season trip to a new creek. Will give us an advantage next season with this spot for sure.  Had a ball exploring and succeeding in a new area without any help from the locals. Bring on the nationals next month!

Your efforts paid off and it would have been a good hit out for your boat. Great pics too.
