40m drop off

JRC 600w, its starting to struggle at this depth, 1kw plus is the go when fishing 200m plus. Need to fish out 200m plus alot to justify the extra$$

Have fished it a bit, mainly

Mon, 2008-04-07 22:42

Have fished it a bit, mainly caught pinkies, queenies, leatheries and big flat head along the bottom edge, haven't had much luck with the cod at this spot though. Only get to fish it a few times a year with the weather the way it is.

There was fish on it, caught

Tue, 2008-04-08 06:21

There was fish on it, caught some good pinkies that day I took the pic, I don't look for fish on the sounder any more I just look for good bottom, some days have had clouds of fish showing and not a bite and some days no fish showing and have done well so I just give it ago.

Vagabond you may have already done this if you haven't try going into your set up and up your gain you will get better power out of it.
fished the same depth and had no problems when i did this to mine.

I do increase the gain as I get deeper, I didn't now you could increase the gain power in the set up menu, I'll have a look at it, The gain was on 8.7 in the pic and max is 10,

Deep jigging

Sun, 2008-04-13 02:03

Hi Vagabond,
If you are game, I would love to try and jig this drop-off, if there's ever the chance. There may be big amberjack, trevala or hapuka there, and I would just love to find out.

200m plus jigging is interesting to say the least... provided you get hookups!

But anyway, I am happy to try even if I get nothing. Let me know if it sounds good to you.

Cheers,
Kasey

I haven't fish this spot for

Sun, 2008-04-13 07:57

I haven't fish this spot for a while as I'm mainly chasing cod and haven't caught one there yet I've had more success on the flater ground. I've never caught a hapuka or Big eye Trevala there, from what I've read they are more out around the 300m plus, 250m is about my limit it's hard work?

I have a few sambo jigs in the box but have never tried jigging if I do I'll keep you in mind.

diji, are you saying there

Sun, 2008-04-13 10:22

diji, are you saying there is 2 different gains that you can adjust as i just thought you turn the gain up from one of the buttons just with a couple of presses and not actually accesssing the menu?

Hi Jason,

Sun, 2008-04-13 11:58

Hi Jason,
For jigging this sort of depth, even sambo jigs may not weigh enough. 500,600 or even 700g jigs are probably more suitable, depending on current. It is very challenging! But you never know what you get, so its crazy. Almost as crazy as 1.5kg sinkers. ;)

Hapuka and Trevalla are rare, and I've never caught one myself. However a few get pulled out from Perth by lucky anglers every year.

Cheers,
Kasey
