water in gearbox oil

hi all
when i changed my gearcase oil on the weekend,as i undid the drain hole plug water came out first then the oil, i noticed that the washer on the screw was a lot thinner and not as flat as the top filler hole washer, could this let water in, or if not what else could let water in and what damage could be done with water in there,its a 1989 2 stroke 30hp mariner motor i hope i havnt stuffed it as it has been a while since i last changed it.

Water in oil
Dakka drain your oil replace both washers new oil run it for a couple of trips and check it again pretty common with oil leaking through gaskets washers etc.make sure the washers r replaced every oil change not expensive to do this twice a season.new gearbox different story,Good luck.

Yep I agree with Feral, more than likely through the seals. Replace oil and gaskets first as Diji mentioned then give it a couple of runs. Then check. If oil is milky then seals are stuffed.
